Hello

I really want to buy TNG and DSP on DVD but have resisted so far even though they're only €60 each due to the following

- terrible packaging (why the huges boxes - why not just simple packing like the simpsons or seinfeld)

- extras (no audio commentaries? seem to be lacking in a big way)

So I was curious if anybody had any information or speculation as to whether or not paramount will re-release these sets?

And while I'm on it what about re-releasing south park on r2 (r1 sets)?

Thanks,
Simon

They don't get re-released. You just need to wait until they are on offer when they are cheap enough for you to buy or settle for the £60. They will not get below £30 each. Most of the time they are on sale around the £40 price. Even TNG being the oldest, is still £30-£40 when on sale.

THe packaging is better than they used to be. When I got TNG and some DS9 when they first came out. The discs actually cracked due to being held in place too tight.

I now repackage the discs in 6 or 6 disc cases and use these covers (I haven't got Voyager yet).

With South Park. They stopped at sereis 4 in R2 and nothing else has happened. Get the R1 sets if you want them all. I plan to get series 5 and 6 sometime.

I think the UK packaging for (most of) the series is gorgeous, especially when compared to the US versions. Anyway, you won't find them cheap unless they are secondhand. I just completed my DS9 collection by picking up four seasons for £21 each on eBay. Yay me!

Very doubtful they will be rereleased, and extra-wise they aren't terrible when you consider all of them put together. Though I agree, it's not spectacular.

Love those covers, can they be downloaded somewhere?

The extras are certainly abysmal when you consider all the resources at Paramount's disposal, even with the older series: the no-budget Highlander managed an excellent collection of extras. I agree it's doubtful they'll be re-released on DVD (though never say never) but would put good money on an extras-upped set appearing on blue-ray or whatever it is that's coming next, though no doubt it'll still be the uncritical corporate lovefest.

dvdstreet had TNG for £29.99 about 6 months ago.

The packaging looks great, but it is cumbersome. TNG's fold-out digipaks are not as convenient as the book-like digistaks used for the other 4 shows. I'd prefer a digistak in a simple cardboard slip-case.

I'm not aware of any TV series which was already available as a box-set being re-released with added extras. I haven't heard rumblings of new DVD releases of any Trek series, and don't think there would be a sufficient market for them unless they were cheap or provided outstanding features. I expect the next releases to be on a high-definition format.

I understand that TNG, DS9 and Voy's broadcast masters were created on videotape. Hi-def may reveal little detail that is not present in the current DVDs, but would feature less artifacting due to a higher bit rate. These series were photographed on film. I'd like to see matching optical effects created to produce hi-def masters. I imagine this could be very expensive, and might reveal limitations in make-up, costumes, sets and props. It would be glorious though!
