I imagine I might be quite lonely in this thread, but does anyone else enjoy this show? I never pegged myself as a ballroom fan, but I'm getting down with my foxtrot & so on now - Brucey is a treat as the host (Tess Daly less so - although she's harmless) & there are some amazing skills on display (not just from the professionals)

I only caught it from halfway through the last series, so it's great to see it from the start with the new series.

Anyone else tripping over the light fantastic?

You're not alone, I've watched this show from the very first week of the first series and have always loved it!

It's always amazing to see how much the celebrities improve over the series, and fabulous for them to see their hard work paying off.

And to see professionals dancing is fabulous, makes me real envious!

Sadly I quite like it - not for the dance element but for the sheer guts and entertainment shown by the celebs. Oh, I love the judges too ! Much better than Louie and Simon !

I'm not into dancing at all but I love this show. Seeing how well the celebs do (or not) after learning a dance in a week is great.

I enjoyed the quickstep this week and I am really looking forward to the jive next week. Jill Halfpenny did an excellent jive last year and I hope this year's contestants do as well.

As for Fiona - yes she is definitely not a good dancer but neither was Chris Parker in the first series and look how far he got!

I love it too, but the last couple of weeks I haven't been able to catch it properly and without interruption due to silly visitors.

Roll on this saturday!

Gloria has gone & I can't say I'm too sad about it - she did remind me of my Mum dancing at weddings.

The judges seemed quite harsh to me - or maybe the standard of dancing wasn't as good?

Fiona lives to dance another day as well - she may be a terrible mover, but the rehearsals are priceless - I'd like to see a bit more of that stuff.

My guess is Will or Dennis Taylor to go out next week, & Lilya Kopylova to look as :n0rty: as usual.

I caught this for the first time a few weeks ago. I have to say, through ignorance of the art rather than any fundamental objection to the principle, I've never been a huge fan of ballroom dancing but I think I might investigate taking it up in my spare time, it appeals to my sense of elegance and grace :)

I am also rather taken with the gorgeous Camilla Dallerup :luv: who seems to be generating a fair few column inches in the press these days as to whether she is Strictly Coming Dancing with her partner ;)

Did you see Johnny Ball cheering on Zoe on today's show - he was only on for a second that I saw, but he looked well old :(

i have to admit i also enjoy watching it :) i think there dancing is great especially when they've never danced before or not danced to things in the way they do on this!

i thought the judges were a bit harsh in the beginning though. first week or two and they criticised lots which was unfair!

they've all improved immensly since the beginning i think its horrible choosing someone to win although i think zoe ball i sheading for it.

I thought my curse had kicked in over the weekend when James and the lovely Camilla :luv: had a poor jive and should have been voted off (I still enjoyed their performance immensely but then, I don't know what I'm looking at) - my curse would usually dictate that my favourites on shows such as this get voted off, if not on the show I actually start watching from then on the very next one :(

Anyway, I am sure that we will see better things from their waltz next week!

I too am impressed with how well the celebrities have taken to ball room dancing and their obvious enthusiasm for it. I only hope that I can pick it up as quickly when I find time to take up ball room dancing myself - looks like a lot of fun (although I might give the 'jive' a miss if I need to "lead with the pelvis" on the chicken walk - sounds painful) :)

Just how good was the group salsa in Saturday's episode? Absolutely fantastic stuff only slightly marred by Arlene lusting after Darren Gough.

littletreasure
22-11-2005, 06:07
I loved that group salsa. They all did so well. I'm not particularly looking forward to the Argentinian Tango though, not really keen on that type of dance.

At the moment Zoe & Ian and Colin & Erin are my two favourite couples for the final.

charlie angel
27-11-2005, 20:51
Well, my favourite couple are out :(

Have to give Bill loads of credit - his foot seemed to have fallen into new realms of disgusting, but he kept dancing anyway. He & Karen seemed to be having so much fun with their dances that I think it's a real shame to see them go (although fair in terms of quality of dancing of course.)

Now my allegiance switches to Darren & Lilya :)

Bearhorn
28-11-2005, 08:53
I enjoyed Bill's often heroic and always valiant efforts too but it was true that as of last week (if not earlier), he didn't belong in the competition any longer. All the other couples were significantly better (with the notable exception of Patsy Palmer, even Will and Hanna who got voted off last week were arguably better). His tribute to his dance partner Karen was very moving as well, I will certainly miss them next week.

What is judge Craig on? While watching James and Camilla :luv: practise on 'Strictly Come Dancing - It Takes Two' during the week, he was full of praise for their beautiful 'lines' during the waltz, yet on Saturday, he all but panned their performance going against what all three other judges said and giving the lowest mark.

I was enthralled by the Argentine Tango group dance. It certainly does not look like an easy dance to do with all the changes in hold and the intricacy of the footwork, but I thought everyone danced it beautifully.

Kika
28-11-2005, 11:25
I liked Bill and Karen, but it did feel like it was their time to go. As others have said, they're just not on the same level as the remaining contestants (I include Patsy and Anton in that as, by and large, I think they have danced better than Bill and Karen)

I'm hoping for a Zoe and Ian win. I've enjoyed them since the start and loved their tango.

saigon
01-12-2005, 09:39
Sorry Bearhorn, but how can you love Camilla?? I think she is totally vile both in how she comes across and how she looks

I thought Karen was absolutely enchanting both on the floor and off it :luv:

I watched the Argentinian Tango again last night (in an effort to understand it a bit better) - on my first viewing it didn't have that much of an impact on me, but a subsequent viewing has me wowed; I agree with you completely on how intricate it is, & the passion on display was marked - it really does put you in mind of fiery, tempestuous couples dancing well into the early hours of the morning. The sight of Karen Hardy in a figure hugging purple dress was a major plus as well of course.

It's all very inspiring - so much so that I'm considering attempting to to trip the light fantastic myself.

I thought the public voting on Saturday night's Strictly Come Dancing quarter finals was very interesting. I have never seen anything quite like it. James and Camilla :luv: benefitted, as is often the case on shows such as this, from sheer popularity over outright talent. His samba was very poor. However, his American Smooth (what a great name for a dance) was heaps better and I don't think it deserved the panning that the judges gave it.

However, he was the worst celebrity dancer on the night and he should have walked from the show if it was all about talent because even though I am not a huge fan of Patsy Palmer (and find Anton amusing and annoying in equal measures) even she was significantly better than James. As it was, James and Camilla :luv: were not even in the bottom two following the public vote! The fact that the sublime (although off-colour) coupling of Zoe Ball and Ian Waite were in the bottom two just goes to show the power of the public vote - it would have been a travesty if those two walked having garnered three perfect 10s in the competition.

Easy tiger, there are pictures here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/strictlycomedancing/news/2005/09/15/24946.shtml) for you to drool over

I think I'd even put Fiona and Zoe higher in the :luv: stakes than Camilla! She beats Patsy though :gag: :gag:

I think the kicking the judges gave James throughout the whole evening also helped his cause - does wonders for the underdog status.

It does - the same thing happened to Bill and Karen a few weeks ago after they got a slating by the judges.

I think for James, couple his underdog status with his huge popularity (speaking with a staunch history of heterosexuality here, he is undeniably a very pretty boy and I can well understand the middle aged female voting demographic absolutely wetting their knickers over him) it would not surprise me if James got the highest percentage of the public vote on Saturday night. I am slightly ambivalent about James progressing beyond next week, much as I would like to see him go all the way to the finals (his ballroom is amongst the best) he is overall the weakest of the remaining dancers and I would hate to see any of Zoe, Colin or Darren knocked out in the semi-finals.

(Is this my first post on this thread where I haven't mentioned the delightful Camilla... ;))

As good as his ballroom is, James does struggle with the Latin - the final should really be between the other 3 from a dancing point of view.

A lot of people across the intertron seem to be criticising the public voting for their favourites rather than the best dancer, but it's the nature of the beast - phone lines are open all week long so there's 5/6 days worth of votes logged before anyone's seen a dance. It's not just the public that's biased though - Bruno's 9 for Zoe's Latin on Saturday?

Bearhorn - just for you:

I agree - that's why I think the Strictly Come Dancing system is good because the judges award 50 per cent. of the marks (based on the actual dancing, although see below) and the voting public the remaining 50 per cent. The general public are not best placed to decide on who the best celebrity dancers are, they just vote for people who they like watching which is as it should be and as the programme organisers would want it to be. Arlene alluded to this on Saturday's show when she prophetically said that people would vote for James because he is beautiful - and so they did.

There is a certain element of bias in the judges which is more apparent as the weeks go on - Bruno is very pro-Zoe, Arlene very pro-Colin and most of the judges (other than Len who seems to be the least partisan of the four judges) seem to be quite anti-James.

Why oh why did Colin do that stupid dance at the end? Not sure whether it was too late to influence the final result though. Interestingly, but disturbingly, a bookie on Radio 5 the other week said it didn't matter how good Colin was, he would never win in a public vote and hence was never favourite with the bookies, for reasons you can probably guess.

Well, a single reason actually. The same reason apparently they never made Denise Lewis favourite last year - because they're black. This is just what one bookie said though (the one who's on the Eammon Holmes R5 show on a Saturday morning). I don't know how true it is, but he said they never make a black person a favourite when it depends on the public vote. And as we know, the bookies are rarely wrong.

A thoroughly entertaining finale to what's been a superbly entertaining show - some great dances & an electric atmosphere to the evening made for excellent viewing.

I appreciate the risk that Colin & Erin took with their showdance, but it really didn't work - it was such a shame that they didn't come together for their last dance, seeing as what they'd produced over the 10 weeks was mostly excellent.

All good fun & entertainment - & I was pleased that Goughy won too :)

I can't believe that Colin and Erin blew it at the last dance!!! I know it was a risk but surely not at that stage. It wasn't even entertaining (IMHO) !

Good on Darren (I wanted either him or Zoe to win) but Erin must be kicking herself...Hard!

This and 'It Takes Two' were easily the most entertaining shows of the year. Well done all, especially Bruce and Claudia...

Brendan's an absolute sweetheart, it's a shame the way he's portrayed so often. He was lovely when I trained with him and he was so patient with Fiona Phillips. He's a phenomenal dancer. I just wish people wouldn't equate passion/love for what he does with arrogance. He's a very talented, very passionate person which can be edited really easily into 'asshole'. Shame, that. He's a sweetie.

We were discussing that at the wrap party, which professional dancer we'd like to dance with if we were going to take lessons. I would choose Ian Waite because he's been my favourite to watch (both professional and celebrity), and he's an incredible choreographer. Plus, he's very good with his students, very thoughtful and patient (he needed to be with Zoe! lol). Though Karen would be an awesome teacher to have, although obviously I wouldn't be able to dance with her lol

They have some great dresses....and some real shockers sometimes too! It amazes me what they send them out in sometimes. The boys always seem to look nice though, especially in the ballroom dances because they dress them in those lovely tail suits. Some of Patsy and Tess's dresses were a bit concerning though. :)

Well I definitely know that they deliberately partnered Ian and Zoe together because of their heights. Zoe would have looked a little silly dancing with, say, Darren Bennett. :) The height definitely factors into the decision making process when it comes to partnering celebrities with the dancers.

I like Brendan too - very suave!

so you say you worked on the shoe and trained with Brendan? what exactly did you do on the show then? enquiring minds wanna know! ;)

I was part of the training team, going out on shoots during the week, camera operating and logging, and I mainly logged the footage for the VT edits. 11 hour shifts, day and night. A lot of work goes into making that show look easy and fun. :)

I'd love an exciting job like that!

I also had a soft spot for Darren too (Lilia's hubby) :)

Aww Darren! He's such a sweetie! lol I noticed him in the audience at the Christmas Special - he's so cute. He LOVES the live show, always laughs at Brucie's bad jokes, and he's always bopping along and clapping to the music. Really makes me laugh.

God no! lol A LOT of time and effort went into partnering the celebs with their dancers. Looking at the pairings now, they seem to make perfect sense, but at the start of the series it must have been a real headache getting everyone with sensible partners.

Yeah, I was offered a job on Dance Fever (as well as the new singing show Just The Two of Us), but I turned them down to go work on Trauma in Liverpool. Done with Light Ent. for the time being, as fun as SCD turned out to be! :)

I worked on Dance Fever last year and it was a riot.
