I think it's something to do with syndication rights in the US, there has to be a gap of x years before a TV show in can be released on DVD?video.

I could be wrong though :D

i think it 5- 8 years, from when the series was first shown
look at buffy series one they are still waiting and we are already on series 3

Well then how about Sopranos, Band of Brothers and other HBO shows? Is this because its HBO so network rules dont apply?

A US series has to reach a certain amount of episodes before it can go into syndication - I forget how many. I believe it’s so the networks can strip and strand their programming, transmitting a different episode everyday (or every weekday) for months in the same time slot. With Sopranos there are not sufficient episodes for syndication as yet and even so with it being original material specific to one cable channel (HBO), I don’t believe syndication will ever be a realistic option. I’d assume HBO intend to hold onto the rights and re-show the episodes on their own channel instead of selling it into syndication.

Although I could be wrong ;)
