Moving to Home Entertainment Forum.
Went for a Daewoo DS700T from Tesco (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/pan/TrackerServlet^QS^p=898^QA^a=60823^QA^g=19972) for £39.99 a couple of days ago.
Very impressed so far. It has a 7 day epg with good program info. Also the ability to set timers and reminders. Everything worked fine out of the box, and no problems setting it up with TIVO :) .

Any other recommendations for cheap, but good freeview boxes?
Thanks

well imn also after one, form what i can work out so far you can get a cheap one for £30, thought terscos were doing one, but didnt see it on their website, and asdas, and sainsburys. But i would like it to be top up compatible, so assume im looking at £40 minimum for that.

I'm not so sure about top up - it then costs a further £7 or £8 a month for channels like UK Gold

yeah well i wont be using it now, but thought it'd be worth the extra few quid for that option in the future, when my yuears agreement witrh telewest runs out i then have the option who to go witrh.

My favourite remains the Sony VTX-D800. It's fast, great menus and EPG, automatic background channel re-scans, great PQ, well-designed full size remote, and it can be placed vertically on the floor so you don't need to worry about rack space. If you are wanting to run it with a standard TV in a bedroom, it also has a proper 4x3 mode rather than just hacking out the middle of the picture like too many other boxes do.

What is a good one with a top up card port?
Not sure I want one now, but as Cliff says, could be good for a future option

My favourite remains the Sony VTX-D800.
^^ Best one I've ever used.. ^^
..and I've had about 1/2 a dozen different freeview boxes/PVRs. It's not the cheapest but generally regarded in the HT world as having the best picture and sound quality.

Regarding the Sony, it shouldn't be an issue with modern TVs but be aware that you can only use it on sets that have a scart socket.
