Hi guys I have already a surround sound system only thing missing at the moment is a subwoofer. There are two conditions for a buy firstly it cannot be large (partner gets annoyed), secondly it should not cost more than £150.00. Any suggestions will be highly welcome. By the way I have a Sherwood 6106 Receiver.

Thanks

A couple of things, what do you consider too large, how big is your room (roughly) and what speakers do you currently have?

I have 4 large floor standing speakers for front and rear and a Celestion Centre Speaker. The front speakers have 1 bass, 1 middle and 1 high frequency speaker in them. The rears have 1 bass and 1 high frequency and the center has 2 speakers. Hope this helps. Now with regards to size. It should be hideable so not more than 30x30cm but today I was at Richer Sounds and all of their good ones where about 35x35. I did hear of a Kenwood subwoofer which was good and this was not so huge.

Hmm, if you're speakers are of good quality and already produce a fair amount of bass, (which it sounds like they should) then I'm not sure what benefit you will get from a small, cheap sub. I think you are either going to have to allow for a larger cabinet and budget more money.

I've heard some good reviews for the Tannoy Mx-Sub10 eg at audioreview (http://www.audioreview.com/reviews/Subwoofer/product_12941.shtml). Its dimensions are 300x300x410mm.

Peter Tyson (http://www.petertyson.co.uk/hifi/speakers.htm) Product Files -> HiFi -> Speakers , have it for £165.90 (+ about £10 P&P)

No doubt someone will suggest others though

My recommendation would be a KEF PSW1000. It's available in beech and black and it's pretty neat to look at - useful for the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor).
Retails at 199 but I got mine from unbeatable for 150 delivered.

Hi MrLondon,
I have a sub for sale in the classified section which might be too large for you but see what you think.
It's a Yamaha Yst-90 and is 48h X 39d x23.5cm wide. Its a 100w active sub, 8" cone woofer, totally as new and cost me £140 a year ago. I only want £55 for it but you would have to pay me a visit in Winchester down the M3 or I could come see you and up the price a little for fuel. It has low level and high level (speaker) terminals, nice high cut (40hz-140hz) and volume controls so you can integrate it easily with your other speakers and produces awesome bass as my neighbours will testify! I'm only selling it as I have splashed out on a Rel.
It has a long lead so you could hide it mabe, if it will fit in your room it will save you a few bob as it is totally as new and a quality product.
By the way I have the same centre as you, how do you find it?

My Center speaker is really nice, at least cannot complain, but I cannot really compare it with a much more expensive kit. I just purchased the KEF 1000 so hopefully this will sound nicely. Will let you know

Thanks
