View Full Version : MS Exchange 5.5 Question - Attachment Size
Anyone got some experience of Exchange Server v5.5? Is it possible to limit the size of attachments that internal users are sending? We had a situation last week where someone at work sent out a 24Mb attachment to a whole bunch of users (!!!) and I'm wondering if it's possible to set something on the server that will stop users from attaching anything over, say, 5Mb.
I'm pretty new to Exchange - I've had a dig around on Google but I'm not finding much at the moment.

In the properties window for the Message Transfer Agent (MTA) you can set the maximum file size. Ours is set to 5000kb

Found this article, may be of some use: http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/ArticleID/4839/4839.html?Ad=1

Doesn't that apply to incoming and outgoing messages though? I really just want to limit messages that the users send, but still allow them to receive large attachments from external senders.
I found a way of setting a limit on message size for individual mailboxes - if you look at properties for individual users in Mailbox Resources, there's a LIMITS tab where you can set "Outgoing" message size to either "No Limit", which is what all users have at the moment, or set a size in Kb.
Ideally I'd like to set a global limit on message size for all users but have exceptions for a couple of users who need to send large attachments, e.g. our print room staff.
Just read IAmATeaf's article (thanks for that), and on there it says that setting a limit on the MTA size won't have any effect for messages that are routed internally (i.e. from one user to another on the same site) as Exchange doesn't use MTA for those messages. So it looks like that only applies to messages sent from inside the site to external recepients, and vice versa.
