Is a cheap sub better than no sub?

Richer sounds are selling a aiwa sub for £40 is it worth getting as i dont have one?

I have a yamaha 620rds,marantz3100 dvd, celistion f2 front cheap gale centre and old hifi rears.

thanks

mike

Any second hand ones about ? or any good deals on subs

I'd spend my money on a better centre first. This is possibly the most important speaker to get right for home cinema. Far more important than the sub at this stage.

probably not.

I'm not convinced by the need for a subwoofer if you have half decent Front speakers.

I bought a REL thinking I needed more bass, and too be honest, its not added a lot to my system, so I don't think its worth going down the cheap and cheerful route.

If you've got half way decent main speakers then I don't think that the really cheap (<£100) subs are worth bothering with. Mid-range (~£100-£300) subs are fine if all you want to do is add loud booms & rumbles to movies but make sure that you get one with plenty of grunt. For me personally, I want a sub that extends the frequency response of my speakers so that I can use sub on all program material; these, unsurprisingly, tend to be rather expensive.

ps I wholeheartedly agree with soberion's center speaker suggestion...
