View Full Version : Pearl Harbor DVD picture looks too squashed
I watched Pearl Harbor (R2) this weekend and noticed that at least 2 scenes that were in the theatrical release seemed to be missing from this DVD release. These scenes were as follows:
1) In this DVD version, Kate Beckinsale's character asks Major Jackson (the guy that she saved in the hospital during the Pearl Harbor attack) whether she can be present at his HQ when news of the Dolittle raid on Tokyo comes through. The next time we see her is at the HQ, listening as news of the Dolittle mission starts to come in. I remember that in the theatrical version, we actually saw Major Jackson bring Kate Beckinsale into the HQ and explain to her that she could stay if she pretended to be one of the typists.
2) Before the raid on Tokyo, Alec Baldwin's character admits that no matter how successful the mission is, it will be nothing compared to the damage that the Japanese inflicted upon them at Pearl Harbor.
Does anybody else remember these scenes and agree that they weren't included on this DVD version of the film?
Also, I noticed that the picture looked ever so slightly too squashed (ie. everybody looked to short and fat). This problem was so subtle that I only noticed it in some scenes, but is was definitely there. Anybody else noticed this?
That'll be so you can go out and buy the other three versions that R1 are getting most probably!
Sounds like another cinema getting a different cut than everybody else to me. Take a look at the Seven: Collectors Edition thread in the Region comparison forum for some others.
.....maybe you should pay closer attention ...both of those scenes are still there on my R2 copy...i only watched it on Friday night and can clearly remember them
....perhaps you should change your header to 'I was half asleep when i watched Pearl Harbor....what did I miss? :D
I will look again, but I'm fairly sure that they weren't. I wasn't the only person to notice this amongst my family either.
I definitely recall the first scene with Kate B, although I'm not so 100% on the other - it was no doubt there, I'm sure, but maybe just didn't stand out to me.
I didn't see it at the cinema and I watched the R1 DVD a week or so ago.

It is on the DVD. He says to her to look like she's typing and gives her a piece of (blank, I assume) paper to put in her typewriter.

This is also on the DVD. Alec Baldwin's character refers to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in a way that indicates it was a major blow (cos I can't remember his exact words) but then states that their attack on Tokyo will be no more than "a pinprick" but will have a psychological affect on the Japanese.
Watched it on Saturday night so it's fairly fresh in my mind.
thedapman,
Were you watching the UK R2 version?

Do people honestly believe that scenes would be arbitrarily cut from any mainstream, uncensored film- if, of course, they were present in the first place- for no other reason than to aggravate people buying DVDs???
Well I just finished watching the movie 15 minutes ago (which I thought was excellent BTW), and those 2 scenes were definitely there.
Perhaps the title of this thread should now be changed to :
Mods Please Close, as I was obviously asleep when this film was on:D
tinder - i think you made your point with your first thread

I guess the jury's still out as to why they cut the line, "Oooooh men in uniform", said by 'Sally-Can't-Dance' in Con Air - just after the plane goes down.
This line was in the UK theatrical release, but absent on all VHS/DVD releases. The film is rated 18 anyway.
Obviously the image of a man in a woman's dress commenting on mens clothing is too much for anyone at the BBFC (But OK in any traditional UK pantomime.) ;)
Dom ...... why dont you let me decide when I've made my point.....thank you ever so much:rolleyes:
Thanks for your help guys. All of you say that those scenes are there, so I guess I must have missed them (although I wasn't half asleep as some people have suggested).
What about my other question though? Has anybody noticed that the picture looked a bit too squashed vertically?

Splobber and Philc, while I'm really, really, really glad that I provide you's both with a modicum of amusement, could you please explain how/why I've been 'busted', as Philc put it?....and why the 'thought you didnt like critics' comment Splobber?, its not as if this thread falls in to the category of a review or critique....
.......I'm obviously missing something...but that'll be due to my now legendary ignorance.
ps i still dislike critics
