Not as mad as it sounds. If I were to relocate to another country, one which ran on a different voltage system (as many do) would it be feasible to simply swap out the PSU on my desktop and switch in a local one or is my only option a step up/down transformer and plugging the PC into that?

some PSU's have a voltage switch for 110 / 220 if yours has then simply flick the switch, else as you say, just buy a local PSU. the internal connectors will be the same

Great news - considering I've just laid out £1200 on a new PC :D

i took my PC to italy with me. Worked absolutely fine with no need to change the PSU.
It was however, an absolute nightmare trying to get it sent back!
I took my PC with me out to the middle east for six months, then to germany for six months, then to the Middle East again for two years.
Then I bought a new PC in the Middle East and brought that to Spain for three months, and now back to England.
Never had a problem, never had to change PSU's
