View Full Version : Tribute/covers bands... I stand corrected. (XTC related)

I had always thought the idea of tribute bands a bit sad and a bit lame.
However, this last weekend I had the good fortune to see XstaTiC, who play XTC songs, and they were absolutely phenomenal. I was totally knocked out by their enthusiasm and power. Anyone familiar with XTC will know just how difficult some of their songs, particularly the later ones, would be to translate into a live situation. Add to that, that they only stick to 2 guitars, bass and drums the results were even more stunning. They played songs from the entire span of of XTC's career and even did an audacious version of River of Orchids. Shame that this was their last ever gig.
I don't know any other tribute/cover bands - so are there any that really, really... er... rock!!!

I saw The Jamm a few months ago in Sheffield and I thought they were excellent. Obviously not quite the real thing but a lot closer than owt Weller is going to be playing in the foreseeable future.

Earlier this year I saw the Australian Pink Floyd Show, and it was incredible. First time I'd bothered with a tribute band, but this lot sounded just like the real thing, and also did a Floyd type light show. I'm going to see Think Floyd this week, and hope they are somewhere near as good.
You cant really beat the originals, but a good tribute band is a nice way to hear your favourites live.

Saw Think Floyd in Bristol a few years ago and they were excellent.
Check out Hells Bells (ACDC) if you get the chance. Perfect cover Band until the lead singer starts talkin Brizzle in between songs. First time I saw them they supported themselves as support didn't turn up. Pumped out a great set of rock covers.
Magic - a Queen tribute band - are excellent. They even do the operatic bit of BoRap which even Queen don't attempt.
StormFront, a Billy Joel tribute band, are also very very good.
I was at the X-staTiC gig too! Had a fab time - great hearing so many of my favourite XTC tunes done live - figure it's the only time I ever will. Loved hearing Snowman, Beating of hearts, Wake Up and a storming My Love Explodes with Moulding Jr on drums.
Yeah - loved the singalong River of Orchids, whole place sounding like a choir (a bit like Ben Folds did on Army and Not the Same at his concerts :) )
Brilliant night - fingers crossed it's not REALLY their last gig.

Hey umajets - good to see someone else got to see and hear this. Were you just there for that night or the whole weekend? Everyone on the XTC Forum seems to have had the most extraordinary weekend... there's a kind of shellshocked, what-the-hell-happened-here atmosphere over there! It's all very, very weird!
was only there for that show- wasnt going to go due to pressing deadlines, but the missus told me i'd only regret it if I didn't go, so we drove over and got tix on the door. Had to leave straight after but it was a cracking evening. They played a loooong set!
This pic shows me in the yellow tshirt and that's nikki my wife with her fingers in her ears (she liked the music - it was just a bit loud :D)

Some U2 tribute bands :
http://www.zyworld.com/zu2/ (seeing them in Bolton on Monday) - already seen them twice before.
http://www.u2ukshow.com/U2Uk/ (seeing them in Wigan in November - not seen these before but they sound good ontheir website).
Have also seen The Australian Pink Floyd, Voulez Vous, Bjorn Again, and another U2 tribute band called Achtung baby. They were all great.
Tribute bands rock !
The only great tribute band I saw was Bjorn Again at reading festival in, I think, 1993.
They were absolutley amazing, even in the middle of the afternoon.
It was absolutley ******* it down and the place was a complete mud bath but talk about lifting everyones spirits!!
Their vocals and everything else were just so spot on, I can't praise them highly enough :notworthy

I see you've been to Youie's site :)
It was a long set wasn't it - about 3hours in total. I was totally croaky by the end after singing along at the top of my voice. You know, I think it was one of the best live gigs I've ever been to. So are you on the XTC Forum then?
I joined the XTC forum the day it went online, but I've only ever posted there about 4 times. must try harder ..... :)

Ah - I was there from the start too. I post a bit, but I haven't been on there much over the last 3-4 months. Though this last weekend, meeting all those people has certainly rekindled my interest.
Think I'll go and resurrect the XTC thread...

.
Saw Think Floyd last night, and they were very good, but The Australian Pink Floyd Show has to be the ultimate Floyd tribute band. They have a much bigger, and more polished show, and are very close to the real thing.
Not seen the Aussie ones but Think Floyd are great. Saw them a few weeks ago. Strikes me one of the coolest things is that they play quite small venues - whereas Aus Floyd seem to play big gigs. I prefer more intimate venues. I did get the freebie Aus Floyd DVD recently and they look cool too - but in a grander, less "fun" kind of way.

You're quite right, the Aussies are much grander affair, but nonetheless sensational. If you're a Floyd fan, and you get the chance to see them I would recommend it. They have a much bigger show, with backing singers, a sax player, and a great light show.
Think Floyd are a 4 piece with one backing singer, and some reliance on backing tapes. With those limitations though, they do a fantastic job, and are thoroughly enjoyable.
