A mate of mine just sent me this, from actress Emma Kennedy's weblog:

http://www.emmakennedy.net/

> "I've also done a thing for the forthcoming
> Goodies Night on
> BBC2. I'm a massive fan of The Goodies so I was
> really pleased to be
> asked to be involved. I think that'll be on
> this month."

So it looks like we don't have to wait very long now. Could this even herald the much requested repeats season?

I've read elsewhere that we can expect a 60m documentary, a reunion show, and a episode chosen by the production team (and if it's not 'Kitten Kong' I'll eat my black pudding ;) ). No exact date yet though.

I assume now that Jane Root's gone they're probably testing the water to see if a repeats run would be a winner.

Can't believe one woman refused all this time to put the Goodies back on TV, just because she didn't like the show. Shameful, just shameful. :cuckoo:

To be fair, all we know really is that Jane Root was who TBT, GG & BO blamed for there never being any repeats. For all we know, she could just be the scapegoat for some deeper problem with repeating the Goodies.

Anyway, if I was controller of the BBC, I'd make sure there was never another single episode of Ground Force, oh and I'd ban any mention of the word 'Family' on Eastenders, and I'd make Nicky Campbell wear a clown suit whilst presenting Watchdog, and... ;)

more info from http://www.goodiesruleok.com/ - looks like we will have to wait until Christmas for it. If anyone goes to this, can you post a report? :)

You may have read the recent interview with Tim Brooke-Taylor (at http://seven.com.au/news/topstories/110690 and elsewhere) in which he mentioned that BBC 2 is putting together a Goodies documentary to be shown around Christmas. The news gets even better - later this month Tim, Graeme and Bill will be recording part of the show in front of a studio audience in London. I've been told they'll be discussing some of the best moments from "The Goodies".

The "Goodies Theme Night" special recording will take place Sunday 23rd October at 7pm at:
The London Studios
Upper Ground
London SE1 9LT

Entry is strictly ticket only (tickets are free). The only way to apply for tickets is via the website of the audience company STANDING ROOM ONLY (http://www.sroaudiences.com/). Details will appear on their site in the next day or so.

sadly probably the best bits of the night when they carried on and adlibed various tales to the audience in between takes won't be seen. Never knew Tim and Bill swore properly as well

we came soooo close to not getting in (quite a lot of people were still queueing outside behind us and indeed in front of us when we were rushed through at the last minute) we were on the "priority list" due to the distance we had come but the e-ticket we were sent did not have priority on it. so we queued with everybody else while they ran up and down the queue saying if you have priority on your ticket come to the front and you can go straight in. :brickwall
got to the front and the woman says you are late you are on the priorty list - showed her the ticket to prove it didn't say it - she was then on a walkie talkie, apologising and said you can go in but be quick  (que belting down corridors at full pelt with security guards telling us to hurry - so we took a wrong turning and entered the stage area at the front as they were about to start filming. ooooppsss  sat down in last empty section (was only 2 and a bit rows not seated so not many got in after us) we were then questioned why we were sat there and how come we entered the way we did (were we friends of the production staff etc ...) all in all a great start

will post some further detaisl on the actual event etc tonight when i get home from work.

and the doco and reunion show are now combined together at 2 hours long. it will fade to the doco (from the reunion studio show) in 4 parts throughout the show. got to see parts 1, 2 and 4 (part 3 was still being filmed and created at this time).

And his wife wrote to them thanking them for making his last moments so happy.

And Giant Kittens, a Dougal powered by 10 men.

When they showed the numpties commenting on the Goodies it showed how much todays comedy is lacking.

Watched this tonight (well, missed the first 10 minutes after Sky+ failed to start recording  ).

As a child of the 70's, I grew up with The Goodies and loved them! :notworthy

The ones I particularly remember, were 'Kitten Kong' (obviously), but also an episode where Tim ended up with huge foot, after they go looking for bigfoot! :D

Only dissappointment was the lack of an actual 'repeat series' being mentioned. I thought at the end (especially after talking about how it has never been repeated) they would announce a repeat. :(

Oh well, lets hope the Beeb wake up, and hopefully tonigths show would have pulled in enough people to prove a repeat is worthy!

Great stuff I thought.
I was born in 1966 so also grew up with the Goodies. I've had the first of their 'best of' DVD unwatched by the DVD player since October, but watching this plus getting the second DVD for Christmas has spurred me to start watching them. I'd completely forgotten about 'Goodies Rule OK' even though I loved it at the time. Just checked though and it's not on either DVD
Guess that means a third DVD at some time.

Loved the clips from scatty safari, with Rolf Harris, would like to see that one, was creasing me up. As a kid I remember my favourite was the bionic baby episode, with Tim in the pram I believe.

Its totally CRIMINAL its never been repeated - when "Dad's Army" and "Some Mothers..." got repeated numerous times. I grew up with the Goodies, feared it had dated, bought the 1st DVD, found so much of it was STILL bloody funny. My other half who was born in 1973 and so doesn't remember them first time around loves the DVD too and laughed out loud a lot last night, watching "the return of...". I just got the 2nd DVD after xmas in the sales for £12.99. There can be no reason surely for this not to be repeated when so much of it isn't dated, its just silly - and still funny as a result!

Come on BBC, sort yaselves out!

31-12-2005, 11:36
well I have to say that a lot that was filmed for the programme while we were there in the audience was not included, looks like someone at the beeb decided to cut the timeslot by quite a margin :(

Other than that did enjoy it.

I grew up watching the goodies and last night brought back many memories.

The excuse that they could not find a suitable time slot to repeat the show is pure rubbish for if it was so, Monty Python's Fly Circus would have NEVER had a repeat.

No the real reason The Goodies were never repeated was the fact they defected to ITV.

Mind you I did find it strange there was no mention of Bananaman a cartoon series from the 80's which had ALL characters voiced by the Goodies.

But still last night was Fun.

Great show and only added to the fact that we need The Goodies back on our screens. Why on earth aren't the series shown on BBC3, once a night / a week, even late at night?
Anyhow, how difficult would it have been for the Beeb to put on at least one full episode after the documentary, maybe the festive "Goodies and the Beanstalk"??? George Best gets a whole evening! :|

Goodies call for repeats campaign

Comic trio The Goodies left BBC for ITV in 1981
Goodies founders Bill Oddie and Graeme Garden have welcomed the fact that their nostalgia show Return of the Goodies attracted 3.3 million viewers.
BBC Two's 30 December show gained "a pretty respectable viewing figure for a nostalgia clip show", Garden said. The Goodies left BBC for ITV in 1981.

But Garden said he would not pressure the BBC to repeat the original series.

"We've been doing that for 25 years without success. Perhaps now it's time for others to lead a campaign."

A BBC Two spokeswoman said it was "too early to say" whether it would now repeat past episodes of The Goodies.

"But we certainly wouldn't rule it out given the audience interest," she said.

Surreal comedy

Return of the Goodies was the day's most-watched programme on BBC Two, watched by 14.2% of the available TV audience.

Garden said: "To put it in perspective I suppose it's worth noting that the wonderfully funny sitcom The Thick Of It only got about half that figure."

The surreal comedy series ran from 1970 until 1981 on the BBC
However, it was beaten in the ratings by BBC One's As Time Goes By and Midsomer Murders on ITV1, which drew seven million and 5.8 million viewers.

First broadcast in 1970, surreal comedy series The Goodies starred Garden, Oddie and Tim Brooke-Taylor.

It also spawned hit singles The Inbetweenies, Funky Gibbon, Black Pudding Bertha, Nappy Love and Make A Daft Noise For Christmas.

Oddie, who now presents BBC series such as Springwatch, said he was "pleasantly surprised" by the success of Return of the Goodies.

There are so many TV channels now, I would think someone could find space to repeat the original series

Bill Oddie
"But it was a shame we could only show clips, rather than whole episodes of The Goodies," he said.

"There are so many TV channels now, I would think someone could find space to repeat the original series.

"Maybe they could start a new channel called Can You Believe We Used To Think This Was Funny? The Goodies could go on there."

Garden said the trio toured Australia last year, where The Goodies was regularly repeated on TV.

"We have a great fan base over there, many of them now 30ish, with kids of their own, who they are now educating with the Goodies DVDs," he said.

I've often thought that I might be looking back at this series with "rose tinted glasses" & it was properly for the best that it was not repeated so as to not damage my happy memories of it.

However after watching this the other day that has all changed & think that they should be back on our screens PDQ. I was quite surprised watching this how much it must have influenced so much mid 80's early 90's British comedy. The Young Ones (& its clones) was basically the same sort of set up (group of blokes living together, doing different things/theme's each week, often getting blown up etc, but all back as you where next week) with swearing.

The are a much underrated British comedy act (well by the BBC anyway!) that fully deserve to be up in the British Comedy hall of fame along with Morecombe & Wise, Python & the Goons etc.

The main problem with the Goodies is that it's so very patchy and inconsistent (I've seen maybe 90% of the extant episodes - still have 40-odd kicking about on VHS), and virtually every episode has massive dead spots in it IMO. There's also the issue of scheduling, as it's too adult for kids but undoubtedly appeals to them regardless.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan and their visual inventiveness is second to none in their field - the British film industry sequence they showed as part of this programme demonstrates this without doubt. Given the money they must have had, what they achieved is remarkable. There's also the fact that Graeme Garden makes me laugh in any context.

What I'm saying is don't assume that you're not looking at it through Rose tinted specs, just because you enjoyed a best of clips show!

Its not just the BBC though...I wonder why someone like the Paramount Comedy channel hasn't picked them up for repeats??

Although great, they repeat Monthy Python F.C. all the time.

Surely The Goodies would fit into the PCC if the BBC dont want to repeat them?????
