I checked out and reviewed the 1973 American Graffiti, George Lucas' first mainstream flick. I didn't like it much, and thought it was over-rated. Check out the link in my singnature.

What do you guys think?

Yes, it's one of my favourite films in fact. I've commented on your review elsewhere.

I liked it -- as simple as that i suppose, nothing more nothing less. Certainly wouldn't mind watching it again :)

Probably Lucas' best movie - and the first time he tried re-inventing a genre..

I think it's a pretty good movie, the soundtrack is good (in fact I bought it on C.D) and Harrison Ford had a good cameo as well. :)

i liked it-made me nostalgic for a time and place I'd never experienced!

Love it! Paul2 hit the nail on the head with his 'nostalgic for a time and place I'd never experienced' line. This is how it made me feel when I first saw the film around 15 years ago and it still has the same effect on me to this day!

OK, you could argue that Lucas was looking through a 'rose tinted lens', but I think he produced his most well rounded, warm piece of work with this film.

Nothing incredible, but quite sweet and a great soundtrack :) Well made and atmospheric, a genuine script. 7/10 :)

Ive seen it twice recently and i enjoyed it both times...it doesn't really have too much of a story to it, but it made me feel nostalgic for a place or time ive never been to, and that accounts as a strength...

BTW: Does the Harrison Ford role count as a Cameo? - As i always thought that a cameo role required the person to be famous, but wasn't this Harrison's first movie role? Or was that 'Apocalypse Now'?

Even if he was famous, the role is a little too big to be a cameo. Just a small part rather... :)

Ford's first film was as a contract player for Universal in 1966-67ish, "Dead Heat On A Merry-Go-Round" with James Coburn. He has the exciting role of "Messanger".

After finally watching all the Star war's films on Sky the other day I now know that George Lucas has made only one good film. I didn't find American graffiti over-rated at all, it's a great film. Now Star wars, there's an over-rated camp space pantomime.

A brilliant movie imo, on par with all the great American movies from the early 70's. In fact so good that I still can't understand why I'm utterly unmoved by anything to do with Star Wars. American Graffiti has wit, emotion, depth of character and a sincerity about it that I've been unable to find in any of Lucas' his other work (well, he did co-produce Paul Schraders 'Mishima' with Coppola which is of course commendable).
Lucas sure made a detour in his career, read the book "Easy Riders, Raging Bulls" by Peter Biskind to get an inkling of what happened and motivated him.
