Hi all,

My dad is getting a digital reciever to replace his aging Prologic beast but is insisting on keeping the unit in the same place as the old one, which is about 5 metres away from the DVD player.

I haven't seen any cables this long, so will he need to get one made up? Any idea on the cost and where we could get it from?

Cheers for any help,

K.

Longer length cables are readily available from the likes of RS components and cpc (http://www.cpc.co.uk).

Depends on the connection. The longest optical that I've seen is 3m. Richer sounds have a 5m digital coax for 39.95

for Co-ax connection, try this 5m lead (http://www.beyondhifi.net/shopping/MoreInfo.asp?ProductID=418&CatID=102) for under a tenner, Or here (http://www.beyondhifi.net/shopping/MoreInfo.asp?ProductID=654&CatID=284) for a 5m Optic cable for £18.

Cheers people, looks like I just wasn't looking in the right places :p

On a similar note, if a ten metre cable from beyondHiFi costs 16 quid, how come Richers' own Cambridge stuff costs 20 quid for 2 metres? Is there a quality diff?

Possibly/probably, but it depends on what you're using it for. With an analogue signal, such as connecting a CD player to an amp via two phonos, then the quality is very important in preventing signal degredation. With the digital signal you get from a DVD, the quality of the cable is far less important. Which is why you don't need such expensive cables for it.

Is there anyway of testing if a coaxial cable is 75ohm? I've got a multimeter with various resistance settings but couldn't work out how to check. I guess you pass a current through the lead and meaure the resistance.
