I have 9 or 10 Video 8 (8mm) 90 minute camcorder tapes, dating back to the early eighties that I would like to get transferred onto DVD.

Spent a bit of time Googling and there is quite a variation on pricing for this sort of service. Best I can find is http://www.videondvd.co.uk/ who have quoted me £13.99 per tape, including VAT and delivery, with first tape free. Looks like a professional set-up and I like the prompt response to emails.

Anyone heard of them? Used them? Anyone recommend an alternative?

Psybear ... I recently did this for a colleague of mine but it involved the use of my Mini-DV camcorder which has analogue in ...

Was a case of connecting his video 8 recorder to analogue in on my camcorder so I coudl record his video 8 tape to a minidv tape (which is what he wanted as he has a camcorder with no analogue in)

I can help you out depending on where you're based etc. Maybe you know somebody with a digital camcorder that has analogue in.

Once the footage is on miniDV tape and has been digitised, it's a case of plugging direclty to a DVD recorder (which I could do as well) or dumping to a PC, encoding and burning a DVD...

I did this with my camcorder a while back, you need to (if my memory serves me) connect camcorder to pc (firewire is best) and copy footage to pc, this creates an avi file which you then have to convert to dvd format before burning to dvd. You might be better off buying a digital8 camcorder with firewire and doing it yourself.

Thanks for the replies.

emeyedeejay - you probably can't help me - I'm in Belfast - but thanks for the offer.

As for buying a digital8 camcorder, well that's a bit extreme. Hardly ever use my old Canon 8mm jobbie - comes out on Christmas morning for the pressie opening and that's it - so I wouldn't get any more use out of a new one.

I was hoping someone might have heard of this company. Might just go ahead with it, take a chance.....

Here's another thought ...

You say you want to do 10 odd tapes at £14 odd each - works out to £140 odd ... (used the word odd there a few times eh!)

Why not buy a dvd recorder - the unmentionable catalogue store is currently doing one under £100 - that way you can dump your tapes to DVD yourself and have a dvd recorder for use after that process is complete ...

Just an idea ...

Or.... Buy something like a Hauppage PVR 350 from eBay (http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-582776-5826355) stick it in your PC and transfer the video to your PC which you can then cut \ edit and remove all the shaky cam and feet footage.

How would I transfer them? Bear in mind this is an analogue camcorder... do I simply use the camcorder to play the tapes through the TV and record onto the DVD Recorder via the scart connection?

As for the Hauppauge... that looks way too complicated for me.

(Thanks again for the suggestions, very helpful.)

Either using a Phono to Scart cable or Phono leads to a Phono to scart adaptor.

Basicaly the same way you would transfer the footage to you VCR tapes. :)

Exactly ...

Just think of a dvd recorder as a video recorder that uses writeable DVDs instead of video tapes.

The DVD recorder will have a scart socket (video and audio in) so you may need one of these ... http://www.rfconcepts.co.uk/Scart-RCA.JPG ... to be able to connect your camera to the recorder...

It may also have RCA connectors (red, yellow and white) in which case you would just plug your camer cable directly to the recorder.
