A friend of mine across the pond recommended I subscribe to a particular newsgroup... my ISP is Blueyonder, and I took a look for it - but it's not listed.

It's nothing particularaly eyebrow-lifting, so I wonder do BY block certain groups; anyone know? :suspect:

no, but you can only list the newsgroups available on BY's server afaik. So thats maybe why you cant see it.

If it's a text newsgroup and it's available on their feed you can add it yourself here: http://news-text.blueyonder.co.uk/

BY are not adding binary newsgroups to their news server at the moment and are unlikely to do so for a while as they are currently using additional capacity to cope with the growing demands of the current feed.

With BY's groups, there really has not been much that I have wanted that has not been listed by them. Couple that with the fact that I do not pay extra for them and that because of the speed increase I am currently downloading at 917kB/sec, I really can't complain!
BY have taken some time and effort to improve their servers, and it has been, on the whole, well worth it. Hopefully they keep going at it and some beancounter does not look at the current additional capacity situation and pull the plug.
