View Full Version : Moulin Rouge DTS problems?

Does anyone have any problems with the DTS track on Moulin Rouge R1.

Mine has serious lip synch problems. It seems to be slow by the smallest margin possible but renders the DTS track unwatchable.

The DD track is just fine but nowhere near as dynamic.

I have a Pioneer DV 737.

Anyone else notice this at all? Check out Your Song and Diamonds are a Girls best friend for example.

This is the second report I've seen (and the other guy also had a Pioneer, a 636 BTW) about the DTS track on R1.

I've seen no reports of problems with the R4 (and mine plays perfectly).

Mines is a 636 too - glad I cancelled my R1 and went for a R4 now :)

Yes, I can confirm definite lip synch problems with the DTS track on my R1 version.

I'm using a Toshiba SD2109. I actually had to switch to the Dolby Digital track as it became too annoying. :(

Yes, within 10 minutes of watching Mouling Rouge R1 with the DTS track I was horrified to notice the audio sync problem too.

My player is a Pionneer 626 which according to Pionneer had fixed the old sync problems associated with the older 5-series players. Otherwise I wouldn't have bought the damn thing!

I have well over 300 DVDs and I've never had audio sync problems before (excepty with dubbed Hong Kong movies ofcourse!). Surely the fault is with the disc.

Anyone heard anything from Fox Video about it? I hope they recall the faulty discs:mad:

Even if they recall the faulty disks it will only be open to American residents because of it being R1. Your best hope is if the retailer you bought it from will except returns.

My copy only has lip synch problems on the 'Diamonds are a Girl's Bestfriend' song. The rest is hardly noticeable.

*ahem* my R1 DTS played fine as did my R4. Though my DVD Players were a custom HTPC and an Arcam.

Any more news on whether the R1 is badly authored, or whether it's showing up inherent lip-sync problems in certain players?

There's a thread (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?threadid=32051) on the home theater forum (http://www.hometheaterforum.com) about the R1 DTS problem, but it was started by someone in the UK! I would have expected to see loads of complaints from US punters by now.

I have a Sony DVP-535 - I'll load it up when I get home and let y'all know...

Ah Jenz you've saved me from a weekend of "fretting"!! My R4 is waiting for me as a burfday present on Monday, so reading this thread has had me a little bit worried about my Arcam DiVa 88 - I guess I need worry no more!!!!!

Aye - severe lip sync problems with the region 1 DTS track and the Sammy 709. Shame as its a really dynamic sound track - quite the best I've heard.

OK, I've watched the R1 on my Sony 535, and here's the verdict.

There's *something * not quite right about the DTS track, but it's not as straightforward as the lip-sync being out. I've studied the lip movements very closely at various points throughout the film, and for the most part the sync was pretty much spot-on.

But... watching the film, it felt like the whole soundtrack was being mimed. What you were hearing just didn't sound like it was coming from the actors' mouths. The centre channel on the DTS track was far louder and clearer than that of the DD track, and IMHO was drowning out the background music and sounds at times. The DD track sounded more realistic and balanced.

I think the clarity of the DTS track may have been showing up inherent lip-sync errors in the mixing of the soundtrack, especially in the songs. Watching the Jim Broadbent extra, he comments at how the actors were given marks for their lip-syncing during the music numbers, and he ususally managed a B :p

I'd have to watch the film on one of the 'problem' players to say for certain that it's a player lip-sync problem.

John Nelson,

I agree with what you have said. It doesn't quite seem like a lip synch problem more of a bad DTS master.

I wonder what Fox have to say about it?:(

No Problem on my R4 copy with my Tosh 2109...........

I go along with what John Nelson posted above - however I found that the DTS track seemed quite out of balance in parts with centres overpowered by the right and left 'stereo' channels - and that was after setting it up using the THX programme thinggy on the disc!

A question though. Did anyone else who saw it in the cinema think there were lip sync problems with the actual movie? I seem to remember thinking at the time that it was not quite spot on in parts - or am I mistaken?

Apart from all this - the package is a stunning one - the extended dance routines making the extras particularly notable IMHO.
