I said this at the beginning of the year and was assured Warner wouldn't let such an opportunity go.

Then a bare bones disc was announced, but again "oh but an SE will come later in the year".

The year's nearly out... nothing.

Warner... what a waste. You did realise what year it was?

Anyway, as a micro-review of the disc having just watched it...

Great picture, great sound, err.... not much more I can comment on as there's f-all else on the damn disc

Spent the entire film wishing I had a commentary track to flick to so I can find out how scenes were shot. Just one by Clarke or Trumbull would have done (Clarke especially before he pops his clogs). On top of this there have been some fantastic documentaries over the years, and an excellent one shown several times on Film 4 this year with contributions by several of the actors and Clarke.

2001: A Let Down

I wonder what would have happened if MGM still had their hands on this?

Oh well, at least Creative Design Arts (Metrodome) saw sense to celebrate the year, even if they just do gimicky boxed sets.

I agree, i thought that althrough the disc DID have excellent Sound and vision that it should have been Disc1 of a 2-disc set. Countless documentries have been made about the movie (not least the brilliant one on C4 recently) At least we did have the movie on DVD restored, looking as good as it should

Bear in mind that Kubrick's estate might have had a say here - his former PA Leon Vitali has already confirmed that with just one or two exceptions (notably Vivienne Kubrick's documentary on The Shining), he wasn't that keen on extras, much like Woody Allen or the Coens.

Obviously, I have no way of knowing if this is in any way contractual - but when I booked films for the Everyman Cinema, I can't tell you how sick and tired I was of getting complaints that we failed to show such-and-such an "obvious" film in a particular season, as though I hadn't spent weeks trying to track down a print and the necessary rights clearances! So it may not be Warners' fault.
