For those of you who didn't order the R4 or have held off ordering the R2 according to the digital bits the R1 version will have an anamorphic widescreen picture and DD5.1 sound!

Wish I'd waited and not ordered the R4 disc now:(

Watched the the film the other day and the picture is really crap at the beginning of the film with lots of grain during the first 3 chapters and a lot of very noticable digital artifacts. Clears up after that though and the picture isn't that bad, perhaps a tad soft and not as much detail as more recent films. definately not reference quality. Then a gain I wasn't really expecting reference quality for this film but it could have been better.

always wait for the R1. 99% of the time it will be the best availablr release even if it takes longer to come out there...

the digital bits' review of the Blue Underground reissue is now up here (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/reviews3/finalcountdownse.html) and it looks like BU have done the film real justice.

Where is the best place to get this release of a great film from?

I've been contemplating buying this movie. I've never heard or seen anything about it before. I read the review on Digital Bits and it sounds interesting. Any comments from casual viewers of the movie (Fans will obviously be biased)? How is the acting and overall production quality of the movie? Is it B-Movie quality? Has it aged well or not?

I saw it on release and thought it was pretty awful but I watched it on telly a few years ago and quite enjoyed it. I thought the ending was a huge cop-out but there are pleasures to be had along the way.

Except that in this case this is the second R1 release so that logic wouldn't work. Actually, if you check http://www.dvdcompare.net/ only about 50% of R1's that they've compared are better than the release in a different region.

Just ordered from amazon.ca with a $5 voucher from the bargain forum - about £8.50 delivered. Thanks for the heads-up on this release Cornelius.

Here's a link (if it works):

The Final Countdown - Amazon.ca (http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00019GHQ6/thedvdforums06-20)

I'm a little confused by the three releases that amazon list, but I assume that the Limited Edition one that they list is the 2 disc release being discussed here, while the widescreen and pan and scan versions are the one disc editions that will be on normal production. The LE is, I think, limited to a tiny 100,000 copies. ;)

Good spot Fozzybear; enlarge the image and it definitely shows the 2-disc - the single disc versions at amazon.ca are actually dearer. This must be a misprice!

You must be a patient bugger! That's the price with 6-8 weeks shipping! I've paid a couple of quid more for 7-14 days!

Very patient. :D I've got a lot of films I've yet to watch anyway, so this will go to the end of the queue, and I don't mind waiting if it means saving some money (unless it would involve buying from a poor supplier!).

Why pay more to get it quicker if it's going to sit on my shelf for ages before I watch it anyway! ;)

Deaks. If they're anything like Amazon.com then I'm expecting a 4 week wait, 5 weeks tops.:)

..and hopefully, as it's a pre-order, it'll be dispatched before the release date.

I'm hoping it arrives before the second May bank holiday as I've got a couple of weeks off work. I'm confident it'll get to me by then.:)

BU got a touch of the Anchor Bay "stretch it out to 2 discs" disease with the LE release. Wouldn’t take much for this to go on one disc. Nice lenticular cover.

Anyone gone all through the commentary yet? Not sure how interesting the DP is going to be for 100 minutes.

I watched this through yesterday - it does indeed look and sound good, although mine pixelated badly at one point, but upon re-playing that bit it was fine.

I haven't listened to the commentary, but then I never do, as I find them boring unless done in character like This is Spinal Tap.
