One of my kids has come in with a vcd,and when playing it the display of my reciever shows MPEG,which flashes off and on, and whilst doing so the sound is off and on as well.I suspected this may be a protection mode of some sort so switched it off.Could anyone shed some light on what is going on?

is this a copied vcd? and does the picture skip with the audio?

sounds like a dodgy audio track to me - making the amp detect and lose the signal

That would not explain why the sound from the tv speakers is unaffected, would it?

:o you didn't mention that before - haven't got a clue then, sorry. You can try using phonos from the dvd player to the amp rather than a digital connection (still doesn't really exaplain it though)

You could always be less of a skinflint and go to the cinema to watch it ;)

Hmmm,

Has the amp played VCDs OK before?

It may be some setting in the DVD player - AFAIK,
a DVD player should output PCM-44.1kHz (standard CD bitstream) on it's digital audio out jacks when playing back a VCD.

From what you are saying, it may be outputting an MPEG encoded bitstream, and few amps can actually deal with this (in either MPEG1 or MPEG2 form).
However, most European DVD players will deal with MPEG audio internally, in either form (MPEG2 audio was actually one of the European standards for DVD soundtracks many moons ago, but it was dropped in favour of Dolby Digital).
MPEG1 is the sound format used on VCDs.

Mike you may have something there.Changing the Audio output properties in the players menu from bitstream seems to cure it.
