I just bought a Mustek V56LA-2 DVD player as a cheapo 2nd DVD player for the bedroom, but when I connected it up last night to my Samsung portable TV, the picture was in black and white! I was prepared to ring customer support today to ask for help, but thought I'd try the player quickly on my main TV, and low and behold, it was in colour!! I tried again on my portable TV, and its B&W  I've tried in the phono inputs and in the scart input, but with the same result. Its a R2 PAL DVD I'm trying, and the output of the DVD player is set to PAL, so I can't understand why its a problem! :(
Has anyone seen anything like this before?
cheers ;)

Are you using the correct AV input mode, the player could be outputting a signal as S-Video and the TV set to composite input, which gives a black and white picture. In which case you would either need to change the output from the player to composite (or RGB if the TV supports it) or change the input on the TV to S-Video if it supports it.
If the TV has more than one scart socket it could be that they are set up to support different inputs as well, so it might be that you need to use a different scart socket.
edit - When you used the phono inputs on the TV what output where you using from the DVD player, still scart or does it actually have a phono plug on it? If it was scart ouput then I'fd definitely say that you need to change the output mode of the player!
It's not a black and white TV is it? ;)

hehe...no its not a black and white tv :D It's not a ntsc tv or ntsc dvd either.
I think the s-video / composite comment could be the answer. I've tried outputting from the phono output (marked as s-video!), but also directly from the scart. SImilarly, I've tried inputting to a scart socket on the Tv, as well as a phono input. I can't readily find an option on the DVD player or TV to change output/input types though...I've got a sinking feeling that the two just won't be compatible :( Maybe not the best £23 I've spent on a DVD player, eh :(

It'll be options on the DVD player you'll be looking for I'd have thought. It sounds like you need to make the DVD player output something other than S-video through the scart. Prolly be in the setup menu.
Otherwise, has your TV got one of those weird little s-video sockets? You can get phono to s-video cables if it has.
good luck.

'fraid not, there's no option in the set-up for s-video/composite. My TV doesn't have a S-Video input either (its around 10 years old now, and was pretty basic at the time) :(
I think its going to be a case of selling this on I'm afraid :(
