View Full Version : £500 to spend thinking of getting Nikon D50
Well the wife has given me permission to flex the credit card and get a DSLR. She even got me a book (an Introduction to Digital Photography by Tom Ang - of you want to know).
So I have £300 of my own and I am adding £200 from the credit card which gives me a grand total of £500 for the camera.
I have been asking in the classifieds for a couple of weeks now for a DSLR second hand. I was hoping to get a body and some lenses for that price but I have had no luck so far.
So have spotted this Nikon D50 on 7DayShop (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http://www.awin1.com/awclick.php^QS^mid=530^QA^gid=6083^QA^id=30372^QA^p=http%3A//www.7dayshop.com/catalog/normal_search_result.php%3Fkeywords%3Dd50%26x%3D9%26y%3D14)
so is this a decent offer?
thanks
Stu
if you do go for the D50, don't forget this, http://www.nikon.co.uk/sites/d50cashback

If that £500 is before the cashback from Nikon then that is a very good price from what I can see on pricerunner.

7DayShop isn't applicable for the cashback, as they're outside the UK. You can get it a little cheaper from AJ Purdy Ltd. (http://www.ajpurdy.co.uk) - £529.99 before the cashback.

It doesn't matter if its outside the UK, it needs to be UK stock which 7DayShop's is (its not a grey import), so you CAN get cashback on this.
Jessops knocked £70 off their advertised price for a D70s for me recently, so you could give that a try aswell if you want.
If I order that camera what are the other essential accesories I should get?
Also I am going to Cuba for xmas and I want to be able to take some decent pics, what lenses would you recommend for about £100?

I honestly can't recommend any lens for around £100 except perhaps the Sigma 70-300 APO but thats about £115. You could get the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 but that will double up your kit lens as its 18-55mm.
essential accesories - memory cards.
Memory card is essential, if you don't have already - at least 512MB SD card (- holds approx. 200 shots with the JPG fine setting). Maybe some sort of case, especially once you have another lens or two. Perhaps a spare battery (EN-EL3 or compatible) although the standard one does last quite a while and depending on the kind of photography you intend to do an external flash unit - either Nikons own, or something like a Sigma EF500 DG (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http%3A//www.onestop-digital.com/catalog/product_info.php%3FcPath%3D25_32%26products_id%3D53) (make sure you get one with a Nikon mount). You may also want to consider some kind of basic tripod; again depends on the kind of shots you intend to do.
The 'companion' lens to the kit lens is the Nikon 55-200mm AF-S DX (http://www.microglobe.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1842) ~ £160.00.

You're right - my mistake; seems they're specifically sourcing these from the UK unlike some of their models. That would make 7DayShop (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http://www.awin1.com/awclick.php^QS^mid=530^QA^gid=6083^QA^id=30372) the cheapest, by quite some margin.

Well I ordered the D50 this afternoon, I am looking to get a second lens to compliment the kit lens. I am going to Cuba and I want to take some really decent landscape and panoramic shots, what lens would be my best option?
