Having got almost everything in my kitbag now I am looking to buy a Canon 85mm f/1.8 to fill the gap between my 50mm f/1.4 and my 135mm f/2

Then just a Canon 1.4X Mk2 Converter and my kit should be complete.. :)

Guy's.. What is on your wishlist..

Just about to pick up my Sigma 30mm f/1.4 from the post office to go with my 350D, 28-135 IS, 70-300APO and my Computrekker AW. Thats me organised for my Florida trip in November. Still fancy a Bigma or Telephoto L series though...

35mm 1.4L
85mm 1.2L
135mm 2.0L
200mm 1.8L
24-105mm 4.0L
50-500 sigma (would love a 300-800 or an EF 500 f4L)
580ex flash
Underwater housing
another body (undecided after hating 5d)
1.4x tc
2.0x tc
A pot of gold at the end of the rainbow to pay for it all :(

580EX Flash
New zoom lens that is sharp, and performs well in low light and can be used for sports.
a wide lens to capture landscapes
A basic lighting setup

Length and low light = £££££
Maybe Canons 70-200 f2.8 IS with a 1.4x tc would be good but its a £1200 combo. The Sigmas barely half the price but that IS might be useful. How about Canons fabulous 300mm f4 IS?
As for wide, Canons 10-22mm is a beauty but Sigmas effort is very close and cheaper.

On a budget;)...

Nikkor AF-S 70-200 f/2.8 VR
Nikkor AF DX 12-24mm f/4
Nikkor AF DX 17-55mm f/2.8

then I'd probably flog the 18-70 DX and the cheap-ass 70-300 ED. Though there is a temptation to keep them for light travelling (maybe skiing).

That would give me a good range between 12mm to 200mm with a gap between 55 and 70 which I can live with. I'd get a TC as well to get a bit more reach with the 70-200.

However, if I could justify the expense and didn't care about swapping lenses I'd rather have...

Nikkor AF DX 12-24mm f/4 (I'd go for the 14mm and 24mm f/2.8 primes but I'd rather have 12mm and you can't get that in an f/2.8 prime :()
Possibly the Nikkor 28mm f2.8 (or if I'm crazy the f/1.4  )
Either the Nikkor 105mm f/2D AF DC or Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 AF
Nikkor AF 180mm f/2.8 (edit: maybe the 200 f/2.8 VR for crazy money :D)
Nikkor AF-S 300mm f/2.8 VR

With my 35mm f/2, that lot would give me a reasonable range but there are some gaps, however I'm not big on the portrait stuff and moving my feet is cheaper than getting lenses to fill the gaps ;). Mostly wide angle, and general walk-around with the 35mm, and the rest is telephoto. Though I've got a Tamron 90 Di macro on the way too :D.

or the budget obtion at 300mm would be...

Nikkor AF-S 300mm f4, but ideally the f/4 would be VR though but it's not :(. I'd probably buy such a lens like that over the (vastly more expensive) f/2.8.

If I was really nuts about spending I'd go for the 500mm or 600mm f/4

and of course the Nikon D200 if/when it gets released ;)

First things first though... actually get some skills in taking photos :D

If I had a Nikon, I'd be out shooting with a 200mm f2 VR right now. Fantastic lens that with a couple of converters will give you a full set of fast telephotos.
I wish Canons stunning 200mm f1.8 had IS but its been out of production for a few years with no sign of a replacement.

Forgot about the 200 VR. Hmm, if money was no object, that would be my choice instead of the 180mm f/2.8, and a nice complement to the 300 VR :D

Great point

I think there are lots of people who get seduced by big lenses and fancy bags when they would be better spending there cash on a course or membership to a camera club.

The one doesn't preclude the other. I find its more about enthusiasm which leads to practice, experience and eventually some semblance of ability. If people get that extra enthusiasm from playing with a new lens or accessory, then all the better.
I've been a hobby photographer on and off for 25 years but until digital got me interested again i'd been pretty quiet. I've splashed out on extreme wide angle and specialised macro lenses which i've never had before and as a result have never enjoyed photography more, finding avenues of image taking that exceed any pleasure i've had from the hobby before. The internet has been another huge influence on modern photography and has led to a complete rennaissance in interest for millions at all levels of interest and ability and for many different reasons.

There are certainly people for whom the kit is everything but its simply not true of the majority. Never feel guilty talking about experiences of equipment and what you'd love to own. All part of the fun.

Anything in the £££ price range :D

It's hard to know what to get.....i like the characteristics of the 50mm 1.8...sharp and handles well in low light...

Might have to look at the sigma ranges. So much choice :help:

What webpage do you use to look up len prices?
