I have noticed that the first 2 seasons of Star Trek TNG for march and May next year is available for preorder at play for £79.99.

Excellent they don't hang around. Here are the direct links:

Season One (http://www.play247.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=98617)

Season Two (http://www.play247.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=98618)

Not much info on extras though, I suppose we will have to wait for the offical release from Paramount.

Besides the price, I think to release two £80 boxsets within two months of each other is taking the pee to say the least. Typical bleedin Paramount expecting to screw us twice over when they've shown some reluctance to release certain titles or the best versions of titles from the outset, Star Trek being the prime example, i.e. Non-anamorphic now, with anamorphic SE's to follow over the next 12 months or so.

By all accounts, 79.99 is the RRP.

I'd expect Play are just putting an early marker in place and waiting to see what other companies offer before setting a more competitive price - £10 each would be nice. :D

Seriously though, these are expensive sets, and I reckon the two-month release interval's going to harm Paramount's sales.

Maybe they've taken TOO much notice of fan desires. It's one thing to say you'd buy them all at once, then another to have to part with all that cash in such a short time.

Personally, I'll probably hold off in the hope of another eventual Smiths Buy 1 get 1 half price deal.

What are dvd.co.uk like?

I'll stick with play for the moment as the price will probably change anyway.

If you've already ordered with Play, it might be an idea to reorder when the new price appears.

Some people, myself included, lost a good deal on the Alan Partridge disk. It originally appeared at 14, then went down to 12. Didn't change my order, it went back up to 14, but the people who ordered at 12 got it at that price.

Still, at least I got it. :D

Well, I am happy that they release them so fast. The sooner they finish releasing that boring uninteresting series the sooner they get to the only Star Trek show worth having on DVD : Deep Space Nine .
And the price really isn't too high - I've bought 78 VHS cassettes of DS9 for about 12 ₤ each. So the entire series was about 936 ₤. Seven DVD sets for 70 ₤ each only add up to 490 ₤.
So you could call it a bargain

TOS & TNG are the only true ST series. The rest are just ways of making money for Paramount.

I could never get into DS9, although I have seen a few episodes, so I will be buying TOS and Voyager. Better start saving now...:)

The thing is that worst case scenario, you know that it's going to cost £560 (7*80) to collect every episode of Star Trek TNG that was ever made with some nice packaging and extras... so you can fairly easily make an informed decision as to whether you think it's worth buying.

I have no idea how much it would be to buy the lot on video, but it's surely at leat *as much* if not more.

Plus, we've still got to wait and look at the pricing on R1 and R4. We might well find it coming down to something like sixty quid a box, making it as "little" as £420 to get the entire lot... let's not forget that we're talking about 49 (forty-nine!) DVDs here! That's only £11.50 a disc at RRP... which I don't feel is too bad.

Well I prefer them released quick - I hate waiting ages just to get the next Boxset! I'll be buying them all but would prefer Babylon 5 Boxsets..

Besides the links you posted don't work - Play probably took them off Pre-order already..

When you're talking about such big numbers that's gonna be £1500 for TNG, DS9 and Voyager - crazy amount to be spending on some mug rests...

Sure, but I'm just saying that the actual price per disc is lower than 99% of titles that are worth buying, so while they look like huge figures, on a per disc, and per hour of entertainment basis, they're actually as good, if not better value than most titles on the market.

Yeah, true, but the point I was making is because you are buying in big numbers you realise just how expensive collecting DVDs is. When you buy the odd title once a week you dont think about it as much- you dont realise that we are talking thousands of pounds which is a scary prospect. You could buy a respectable car for that kind of money or pay the car insurance etc.

You don't have to collect them all at once. Just because TNG is being released every two months doesn't mean that you have to buy it. I still haven't got around to buying season two and three of Buffy.

weird,i was just thinking tonight about how much money i have spent on my dvd's, and how much my collection has grown. a year ago i had been collecting for 2 years and had about 40 dvd's. last year i got a job as part of a work placement at uni and now have just crossed the 140 mark and that's including each box set as 1. i am actually a little scared of calculating how much i have spent on them. i remember sorting them on my shelf and not taking that much space, but tonight i was putting them back on the shelf properly (as opposed to on my desk and all around the place) and there's not enough room.

how much do you think that's worth?
19 box sets of between 3 and 6 disks each
and 123 others.

it's these forums that have cost me the money. :)

i joined when a friend told me about the xfiles season 2 bolls up around march.

now i have to find the dosh for DS9.

on another topic, can you sell blood in this country like in the states? or go to a sperm bank or something? :D

Well the fact is Trek fans and SW are quite happy to be shafted. That's the nature of the relationship. As they are releasing some of the worst telly SF ever in two boxsets just seems to rub it in.

Frankly does anybody really want to spend 160 quid just to get the first part of Best of Both Worlds? I would suspect that getting the R1 versions would be best for visual quality. Those early video post-produced shows look awful when transfered to PAL.

Sadly, the links don't work for me either: they just take me to the play homepage.

Same for me with the links.

Hope the boxsets get released in R4 at a cheaper price comparitively speaking due the exchange rate. Think I'll wait to see what develops.
