View Full Version : Flickr or smugmug?
Which to go for?
I like the look of Flickr from the point of view that you can email picture in and they get added, great if your out and about (not sure if it woudl get used that much, but having that ability is nice)
Apart from that they seem fairly similar from what ive seen/read. Some anyone used both (im guessing probably not)
And the people who already use smugmug/flickr, why did you go with your choice? (against the other if you knew about them)
Thanks :)

I started using flickr with the start of the photo a day for July project , the free account is good but with limitations eg 20 meg uploadpre month, can only create 2 sets a month..... but it is sooo easy to use, with the pro account been about £14 per year (yes I did sign up to it)but I have only just started sorting and uploading images.
I also like the fact you can explore and add contacts or bookmark other peoples photos. Another good feature is for othe people to comment or view your photos as a slideshow (mine has been viewed 435 times)
The only thing I wish I could change is the colour of the page to black
cannot really coment on smugmug but i do like the look of it.
edit: when an image is uploaded it is resized into various sizes with the link specified below the sized image so that size can be used for posting/linking and so on
I use pbase, but I've started to play with flickr. It is good, althought the free basic account has only 20Mb of uploads per month. The pro account has 2Gb of uploads. Pbase costs about £12 / year for 300Mb of space. I think smugmug is about the same. I quite like the look of it, it's very similar to Pbase.
There are some smugmug users on here they'll soon turn up.
Anyone else have any comments?

I've just got a free Flickr account, so I'll give it a go.
Not heard of pbase, so I'll probably look into that and smugmug (which seems more configurable) too.

I use photobucket (free account). Haven't used Flickr or pbase, so don't know how it compares.
A big vote for smugmug here. Unlimited webspace was deciding factor for me. Very easy to use, very friendly and prompt email responses to any queries.
Be aware that anyone who gives you a referral code to join smugmug that gets you $5 discount in joining fees also gets a $10 discount for themselves off their next renewal fees.
Here's my site - most of my galleries are password protected though.

Looks like smugmug is the way to go :)
As for uploading your photos, do you guys downsize your files or upload the originals? Also do you guys upload everything or just the 'keepers'? Only wondered as some of my pictures arent worth showing as such, but i want to keep them for personal memories etc
Its just that since getting my 350D ive got about a gig of piccies so far, so would take a while to upload....
Personally I use Irfanview to batch convert and then upload. Did try uploading the originals initially, seeing it as a cheap backup service and taking advantage of the unlimited webspace, but it takes ages, even with a 2mbps connection.
Make sure you take the free trial first, see if you like it.
I thought that would be the case. Do you just convert to something like 800x600?
Thanks :)
Yes, that's what I normally go for. Sometimes my pics are an uneven size due to cropping, but Irfanview lets you specify a 'longest side' size, leaving it to calculate the optimum size of the shorter side.
I used to use freesites like flickr (Still have an account, I have all my 'arty' photos up there)
But I found it more economical to just buy some cheap hosting and install a coppermine install:

Who do you use for hosting and how difficult is it to set up Coppermine?
(Oh yes, and most important, how much space does your host package provide?)

Dudehost :P As my un-domained webaddress suggests ;) :) Do a search on 'dudehost' in the comp-forum on here
I get 450mb of space, 10gb/month bandwidth for a smidge over £22 a year.
Coppermine is a one click setup using 'Fantastico' supplied with the DH hosting.

pbase is very configurable. You use CSS to give you your gallery styles and you can use HTML in your descriptions. I quite like the look of smugmug, but at the moment I prefer pbase.

I'm thinking about doing something very similar. How much bandwidth do you use up each month?

I've just gone pro with flickr - about £14 for the year and 2gb a month upload bandwidth. I found it easier to get around than pbase (which I found it difficult even to delete images!). I'll be using it for the Photo of the Week comp tomorrow, so hopefully my confidence isn't misplaced!
