View Full Version : Some pics from Spa-Francorchamps - 2005
Here are some off my pictures from the wet Spa weekend :) It was an awesome experience and would love to go back although it was wet 60% off the weekend.
Taking photos was a hard task due too the weather and with soo many people standing in the way, and not any room for using my monopod. Soo here is some off my collections:

Fantastic photos, my personal favourites are 6 and 8. Would love the opportunity to go to a F1 meet and take some photos.
Sorry mate, I'm not good enough to critique anything here with regard to framing, exposure & composition but I love numbers 8 & 11. 8 especially.
Looks like you had a great time!

I like number 8 too. I would have liked number 2, but I think there needed to be a gap between the front of the car and the edge of the shot.
Nice shots, well done. Like Flyer though, I'm not qualified to make a critique of them though.
another vote for No 8 here... lovely photo... they all look really good to my uneducated eye :)

Really like No. 6
The way the dirt has formed to show the Racing Line.
Great Photos.
I too would love to go to some of these events but feel the equipment I have is a waste of time. No long Lenses.
I'm gonna defienatly try and get to goodwood next year after some of the pics that have been posted.

I'm off to the Goodwood revival meeting tonight, this is without doubt the best motor racing weekend of the year
I will try & take some picks but I am a Flag Marshal & get very little off track time, Most of us dress in 50s & 60s gear to add the finishing touch, an absolute delight, hope the weather holds out, great racing none of your F1 convoys
spa is the best circuit to see them at mind you

Very nice - what camera and lens were you using?
Thanks everyone :)
I used a 350D canon cam, with "Bigma" lense 50-500mm. Not the fastest lense around and it needs abit more light than canons 100-400mm lense. But the right use off it and it can be just as sharp as canons lenses (I need some more practise tho). The reach you get with this 10X zoom is just worth the money IMO :)

That's interesting, there's a thread about this very Bigma here (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=388217) ... might be worth mentioning there that you took those shots with the lens. They're excellent from what I can see.
Thanks everyone :)

As noted theres a thread about that lens, any chance you could put up the EXIF data? just so we can see the focal lengths?
Thanks :)

The EXIF info is above every image :)
Edit: Here (http://www.evo.no/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=5707) is some other photos taken with the Bigma lense.

Also excellent photos, you certainly have the skill of panning worked out.
Cool photos, definitely well panned. Could be my monitor, but most of them seem overexposed to me though? (1,3,5,7,10,11,13).
Spa must have been amazing, did you get to see Eau Rouge properly? I'm guessing num. 6 is Eau Rouge by the bottoming out of the cars.

I thought that too. A few blown highlights. You didn't use any exposure compensation by any chance?
Still, they look good anyway. Some grain, but that's a given with some of the higher ISOs.
My only criticism beyond the highlights is the framing in a few of the close shots (2, 12 and 13 in particular), but then I can't claim to be able to do any better as I'd be unlikely to even get anything in shot with my lack of skills :D

Like the drag racing shots on your other link - really get a sense of speed in them!

Thanks, yes i feel that number 1 is over exposed, but at my monitor the rest looks fine to me :) Number 6 is the entery for eau rouge. I might add that taking these shots in this weather change we had there wasnt soo easy, i had to change the settings all the time :(

No i didnt use any exposure compensating, dont know what you mean by that tbh :?: Thanks for the comments :D Yeah some are kinda grainy due to the iso needed to be soo high in ordre to get light into the pictures. Picture 2,12 and 13 is supose to look like that, i was aiming for a closeup picture :)
Thanks for your comments and criticism, i really appreciate it.

Just that sometimes if you've dialled in exposure compensation (+EV) and maybe forgotten about it, you could end up with blown highlights. Though if you do use exposure compensation and you use RAW formats, you can usually throw away the compensation as it's a post-process feature (at least it is with Nikon).

Ah, I see, then i havent change any exposure settings:) I can change it on the Canon cam as well.

Well that certainly makes me rethink the Bigma. So many people claim it's a bit soft but most of those pictures are pin sharp far as I can see.
Nice work Schumi - livin up to yer name in the fast lane alright!

Lol, thanks for the comment :)
I can recommend the Bigma lense highly, what you get from that price is superb IMO. You can off course get better looking images with a much more expensive lense, but this fitted into my budget, and i got a few more small stuff too:)
Its pretty heavy to carry around for a whole day and take panning shots, but if you have a monopod that strain is gone:) I didnt get to use my monopod as i wrote at the start off this thread, soo my keeprs obviously got down a few steps due too shake, specialy at 500mm. But using the monopod gets much more keepers, my dragracing pictures above in this post is used with the same lense and with monopod.
And i dont find it soft at 500mm, i know that many say that, but with a zoom that far, you need to get thru alot off air, and now when its summer, or has been, there is alot off humidity in the air. Winter times is the best to take those 500mm shots off landscapes:)

You're only judging it by on-screen resized images though. The proof is in the printing :D
Would you be happy with the low light performance? (especially f/6.3 at 500mm).

Shoot in raw if you have too, then its easily edit afterwards.
I am just recommending the lense because there isnt one lense that is better with this range :) And it takes much better pictures than i have heard before I bought it. Bump up the iso when you need more light, there is many things too do to compensate :)

I'm not keen on the grain with higher ISO, but for the price it's a good compromise as to keep a low ISO would cost a few thousand more :D
