so far all the anime stuff i've seen, except Perfect Blue, has been pretty violent action movies. i'm wondering if many anime comedies are actually funny? (i am easily amused :p)

Yes there are!!! Look out for Urusei Yatsura, which is in my opinion the greatest animated comedy to come out of Japan. There's a whole truck load of TV episodes, about 6 films and then another wodge of straight-to-video films. Bear in mind that in Japan "Straight-to-video" doesn't mean quite the same thing as it does here. I also like Ranma 1/2....

The trouble is, many people seem to thing that the Japanese sense of humour is very strange. It can be surreal, but once you work out what's going on it's actually not all that different to our own.

Those Who Hunt Elves (http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews/region1/q-t/those_who_hunt_elves_vol1-1.htm), Haunted Junction (http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews/region1/e-h/haunted_junction-2.htm) and Hand Maid May (http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews/region1/e-h/hand_maid_may_vol1-1.htm) are all well worth a look.

I think that most people (at least I think :P) would agree that the funniest anime tv series (and movies) is the Slayers. Its so weird!!!! But in a funny way :D

You can buy each of the 3 series in well cool boxsets with extras such as inteviews with the voice actors

There's a shed load of comedy anime available. Personally I think Ranma1/2 is one of the best anime/mangas around. Or there are the more recent Cowboy Bebop and Trigun series which mix a lot humour with a fair degree of drama. Lupin III is also very good, and you might want to check out Kanedaa's review of Castle of Cagliostro.
One particular OAV I'd love to see get a DVD release is Ushio and Tora. ADV secured the rights to re-release the videos from Western Connection a couple of years ago in the States, but so far they haven't put out the DVDs

I love Ranma ½ and Urusei Yatsura is also brilliant.

Love Hina is also worth checking out - it's getting an R1 release in February.

Most anime seems to have an element of comedy, like nagaifiend said even Cowboy Bebop does...for outright comedy a particular fave that springs to mind is Excel Saga (ADV are working on the dub as we type). Love Hina (Bandai are starting this series in February, although a full boxset is available via Odex in Singapore) is also superb. The first two volumes of Trigun had me in hysterics, got the rest to get through though :)

Cagliostro (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=131&story=1816) and Secret of Mamo are the only two Lupin movies i've had the pleasure to watch, both are very funny although Cagliostro is the better of the two (Mamo is arguably more funny). Dominion Tank Police (free with Playnation magazine at the moment) is quite amusing....the list goes on really :D

Boys Be (13 eps) is another funny series, its a bit like love hina but more realistic and just deals with 6 freinds going through school, each one has their own story to tell, the whole set is also available from odex, and sadly no R1 release is on the cards for the near future.

FLCL (Furi Kuri - 6 eps) more bizare than a funny series, but its also a rollercoaster ride so put you seatbelt on when you watch it, good news is that its due for a R1 release in the next couple of months or so.

Golden boy (6 eps) is like a more risque version of a carry on film, this kid bikes all over japan getting into mischief with all the people he comes across gets employed by, or just tries to help.

Tenchi Muyo - Oringal OVA (Stright to video) series 1 & 2 made so far. 3rd series currently being made to finish off the story (Tenchi finally makes a choice)

Tenchi Universe - A retelling of the story for TV, the OVA was a bit complex so the story was simplified.

Tenchi in Tokyo - A continuation of Tenchi Universe series, although widely reguraded as inferior to TU.

It's a Rom-com with a heavy sci-fi twist

Irresponsible Captain Tylor and Vanguard all spring to mind as pretty good comedy / adventure series.
