View Full Version : ADSL: Distance to exchange/line speed.

We've just moved into a new house and i've signed up to F2S's 2Mb service. After doing their line tests they've stated that we'll only be able to receive 1Mb.
Checking various "ADSL checkers" such as Sam Knows it states that we're only 600m-700m from the exchange which I thought was very close. I understand that other factors such as line quality can play a part but I thought that only applied when you were near the maximum distance from the exchange.
Is it likely that we'd be that close and not able to get 2Mb? Is it worth asking F2S to check again or does anyone have any other suggestions?
Cheers
I got enabled on 1Mbit too with f2s even though I'm at a similar distance from the exchange. I waited till I was enabled (3 days later!) and have sent them my line stats showing I'm well within limits, I'm awaiting a response from them.
Isn't it something to do with the actual exchange itself rather than how far you are from it?

There initial reply before I asked about the line distance etc was this:
"We attempted to place you on to a 2Mb circuit, however upon running
line tests it was determined that a 2Mb connection would not be
suitable due to line length and quality constraints."
My Demon line got upgraded to 2Mb and even though the BT site said i'd be able to have 2Mb it's only just holding in there i think, i have a borderline signal to noise ratio so it sort of freezes every now and then. I'm not complaining too much though as when it does work it is nice.

I'm still waiting for BT to upgrade my 512 to 2mb but they have supposedly already run some tests and they say that I may end up with 1mb instead but they can't tell when this is likely to be.
Am I the only one with BT who is still stuck at 512?

After pestering F2S by email for a week to find out exactly why I couldn't receive 2Mb it turns out that "BT have said my line is capable after all" and they've done the regrade for me.
Would have been nice to have an explanation/apology but at least I got it worted.

Nah, I got the same response from PlusNet - I hate being stuck on 512K, especially as I have an 8Mb line at work!!

Consider yourself lucky as i suspect my parents and their neighbours have been upgraded from 1mb to 2mb hence why both of them have lost their broadband connections. Ringing up BT just gets them the never ending purgatory of circling accusation and denial and threats if the suggest cancelling broadband as they signed a contract saying they had to pay BT for 12 months irrespective of whether they could connect
