I have just found out that One Summer is supposed to be coming out on DVD soon.

Link here (http://www.networkdvd.co.uk/)

Mention is down towards the bottom of the page.

Apparently it was delayed because of a disagreement between the director and the screenwriter (Willy Russell)

This was one of my favourite shows from the 80's along with Prospects.
Glad to see that one of them is going to finally make it to DVD.
I was almost tempted to source a bootleg copy as I have waited a long time to see this again.

Anybody here remember this?
Also, anybody going to get the DVD as soon as it out? Just got to hope it isn't going to take ages for the transfer now its been announced.

I remember this one too. Wasn't it a young David Morrisey that starred in it?

It was D.M. in it and now a whole new generation will learn that you can't feed a baby bird on Mars Bars.

I think this was one of the first programmes I saw on Ch4 as a spotty 14 year old (I think I was 14 - was it 1984?). Absolutely superb series. I do believe I cried at one very significant point near the end...genuinely shocked at the way it turned out.

A pity it hasn't been released before now.

Ratso.

Edit - 1983, so was 13. Probably not quite as spotty.

I was about the same age as you (born 1970) and I remember it well. It brought a tear to the eye. Can't wait to see it again, just hope they get the transfer done soon.

Thanks for posting this - I worked on this show for nearly 12 months. Reading the fan site is quite spooky, they were different times and a different life for me.

The disagreement between Willy Russell and Gordon Flemyng started very early in the production. Mr Russell then started to behave a little strangely - hanging around on the edges of the shoots in Liverpool, wearing a large hat so he wouldn't be recognised....hmmm.

Cheers

You might be working for the FBI - I cannot tell you... :)

I'm not so you can :D

If you know, whereabouts were the Welsh hillside scenes filmed ? And the rest of the Welsh stuff...just curious.

Cheers,
Mike.

According to the One Summer website a lot of the filming was done in Yorkshire and not in Wales.

Come on RooterRotor spill the beans.

Right, guys. :)

The production base for the Welsh filming was Bala in N.Wales. It is 23 years on now, so my memories are a bit hazy you must appreciate. But, the strongest specific location I remember is the scene where Billy and Icky are by a stream next to the dead rats hanging on a wooden frame and Icky demonstates his lovemaking technique (Ep 2 I think) - now if you look at this map -

http://www.bala.co.uk/welsh.htm

- Bala is in the bottom right corner - this was shot in a small valley next to the road leading from the top end of the lake, the road on the map parallel to the one going through Llanfor. Perhaps 10 minutes drive at the most out of the centre of Bala.

Next strongest memory is a scene by a misty stream which was shot just off the road leading NW out of Bala, the road through Rhiwlas. This was relatively quite a drive out, perhaps 5 or 6 miles from Bala. The mist was provided by various members of the crew huddled and swatting their hands over piles of burning leaves. Very strong memories for both scenes being buzzed by jets from the local RAF base, who either thought it a good jape to disrupt filming, or were using the sets as targets for practice bombing runs...hmmm.

Other scenes shot close to Bala were the encounter with the scout troop on a hillside, the sing-song at the school camp (some issues regarding this scene on the fan site, but I just remember it being in a field, once again not very far out from Bala), shots of a policeman making door to door enquiries, and the tractor chase (seem to remember this was shot on a Saturday, with roads blocked off and a major tailback of angry tourists occurred... :) ).

Beyond this, locations like Kidder's house and other specific buildings were shot in Yorkshire, substituting for Wales. The fansite is very thorough about this.

Sorry I can't remember anything more dynamic, but it was quite some time ago...

Cheers

GK,

Whats the chords mate?
I don't know why I am asking when I can't remember what the theme tune went like :)

Anybody got an mp3 sample of the theme to jog my memory.

Cheers.

Bump

Great thread. Brings back so many memories, some good, some not so good - Thatcher, being skint, Sergio Tacchini tracky tops. Anyways, the DVD is out on the 16th January '06, so not long to wait now. You can preorder it at amazon.co.uk (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http%3A//www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000BSQQWC/thedvdforums-21).

Now, if only they'd get round to releasing Alan Bleasdale's Scully and Willy Russell's Our Day Out on DVD.

Hi guys - I run the 'fansite' that has already been mentioned.

Thought I'd point out, as someone mentioned the theme music, I've just received news on the extras that will appear on the DVD - and it includes the original music score as a separate sound track, along with some terrific interviews and commentaries.

You can read all about it here: http://one-summer.tv83.net/update.htm

Wow, we get extras as well? Cool, I'm just delighted that the series is finally getting a release on DVD, anything else is gravy. So many people have such fond memories of this series, especially up here on Merseyside. If you're thirty something and grew up in Liverpool in the early eighties, then chances are this TV drama will hit a chord. It's powerful, funny and sad in equal measure.

BTW, cheers for a great site. Very informative, but I was sad to hear that James Hazeldine who played Kidder passed away in 2002. Damn, that's sad, 55 is no age at all.

Well I've sat and re-lived my teens and thoroughly enjoyed it! But the quality of the transfer from Network is disgraceful. Okay, I know it's a low budget show from the 80's, but come on, surely a bit of a clean up wouldn't have gone amiss?
Still, as I've said, nice to have it at all.
