View Full Version : Almost Famous 'untitled bootleg'. DC is excellent!!

Just finished watching the DC version of Almost Famous. If you are a fan of the film then you MUST get the bootleg version!!
The inlay card says it has 6 chapters more than the standard version so I was expecting just 6 more scenes and nothing else. How wrong I was!
There are new scenes yes, but almost every other scene is extended or re-edited in some way! This really add's to the film IMO. It fills out the characters more and generally makes for a better story/understanding of characters.

This is how a DC of a film should be, not just a few added scenes, but subtle changes here and there that really bring the film together!

LOVE IT

This was going to be one of the 5 from my list on your competition.:( But i'll still end up getting it anyway at some point:D

I've haven't even seen the first version yet i've only read the screenplay that came with an issue of sight & sound. Great little book. I've also put off getting it from the library as i think it'll be great watching them together and comparing the differences.

SP7, what is the packaging like?, is it one of those really chunky amaray cases like the Clerks Uncensored?.

Its worth watching both versions. The standard one first then the DC. I was going to watch the extra chapters only but I would have missed out on about 30+ mins of extra stuff!!

The case is a cardboard foldout thing. Its nice but there is no sleeve for it to sit in (ala Simpsons, Unbreakable, X-Men etc) so it does feel like something is missing (to me anyway!). Still, overall its good.
All I will say is the menu's for the original release were better. But who cares about that anyway!?

Sorry you didn't 'win' a copy!

The Packaging is Digi-pack style. Not usually my cup of tea, but it really suits.

Think Fight Club......but without the cardboard slip-case.

I agree with Silverpenguin7 all the way, it adds greatly to what in my opinion was already a great film.

My favourite film of the year, just got better.

Extras are nice too, plenty of supporting info from Cameron Crowe.

Nice touch is the 'Stairway to Heaven' deleted scene! ;)

Yet to listen to the commentry with Crowe and his mother.

I'm off to listen to my 'Stillwater' 6 track CD.

Couldn't agree more, an already very good movie, taken to another level.

The commentary track is one of the most entertaining I've ever heard, with almost no silent pauses and constantly interesting information. The new cut of the movie is also an improvement over the excellent original, I agree. I just can't get enough of this film, it's shaping up to be one of my favourite movies of all time.

I'm finally going to sit down this afternoon and watch this after I brought it back from the States last week, its already my favourite film of the year by a mile and if this cuts as good as you all say it is it'll definately be up there with my all time favourites. The thing thats puzzling me is where is Silent Bob? He's been banging on about this all year and now it's finally out we haven't heard a peep!

Dude, please tell me you are joking!

The new menus are awesome, they are the best menus I've ever seen as they totally complement the film, especially with the great music which was specially written for the menu.

I mean, okay Van Ling's menus on T2 and on The Abyss were technically clever, but IMHO they were a bit style over substance, as they were more about special effects than really complementing the film.

I know we could disappear up our own jaxies talking about DVD menus but I think the Almost Famous Untitled menus kick booty. The original menus were just bog standard pictures, they were so 'uncool', in the really really uncool way, not in the cool 'uncool' way promoted in the movie!

I'm sure the old R1 had animated menu's (pictures sliding in from all angles) with music from the film played over the top? (I may be wrong as it has been a few months sinse I traded it)

They were far more colourfull then the bootleg ones!! I'm gonna have to go check my bootleg again now in case I have mised something!

Anyhow, the film is one of my all time favs so like I said, the menu's are not my main concern :)

Bad luck mate, it's a peach of a disc, one of my favourites.

What exactly seems to be happening? Because if the DVD isn't scratched, and there aren't two DVD issues of the Bootleg Edition out there, then you've got exactly the same DVD as the rest of us but it doesn't work in your machine.

That makes it sound like an incompatability with your DVD player, but quite why this should be, I don't know, because while the content is superb, the things that the DVD offers aren't exactly ground breaking in terms of the way the DVD appears to be set up.

Anyone got any ideas for the poor guy!?

The disc isn't scratched at all and it won't load in my PC drive either. The only thing I can see is a really dark orange tide mark on the inner of the disc.Like I say,the 2nd disc works fine its just this one! Gutted I am,I'll wait and see what happens,if there's no joy I'll buy it again from Play or Ringo's. I was REALLY looking forward to seeing this again. :( ruined my day it has.

Does it have seemless branching or do you have to buy 2 versions of the film to see the before and after ?.

No SB. The bootleg had 2 versions on 2 discs.
Or the standard version has the original cut on a 1 discer.

Neither.

It has two separate DVDs, one has the 'Untitled' cut, one has the theatrical release.

Originally, I thought the only difference between the two were basically specific chapter stops, inserted throughout the movie, as in Terminator 2 for instance.

However I've now been led to believe that actually there is a lot more to the Untitled Cut than this. I can't wait to watch it, I'm hoping to watch it with some mates next weekend!

Anyway this explains my previous question of why they didn't put the film on one disc and use seamless branching to create the Untitled Cut, and put the extras on the 2nd disc.

Isn't it against the T&Cs to post something like that?

PS - Good idea, but it probably wouldn't work...

just watched the extras on disc 2. How cool is the way they do that 'Stairway to Heaven' deleted scene?

It's the first time I ever felt truly 'interactive' with a dvd, as it were. :D
