View Full Version : The Mummy Returns - a second look

Hello people!

Well i went and sold my ageing copy of the mummy and bought the double movie pack (for £25 from Curry's/Dixons/PC-World, it's well worth it). And as some of you know, i wasn't too impressed with the film. But i decided to give it another go and see.

Well! What can i say? First of all it improves with subsequent viewing. When i first saw it i found it confusing as cut too fast (for the MTV generation) and the story jumped ahead why to much. But as you see it again the pacing seem to be better due to the fact you already seen the basics. I still think that 10years was too big a gap between the settings of the two movies but that's a minor grip. Yes the SFX are not convincing enough in most scenes but i think i was expecting too much. Think, 10 years ago it took ILM months to animate the T-1000 to come out of the floor. Today, the army of Anubis was well animated and served it's purpose.

So, in short, yes, not as good as the first, but an enjoyable romp that improves every time you see it.

Also watch out for the trailer for The Scorpion King, Looks like a modern updated version of Conan the Barbarian (And looks crap). Also after going through all the extras in Mummy Returns, it really gives the impression that there won’t be a Mummy3.

I have to say i liked MR when i saw it in the cinema. I haven't seen it since but plan on getting the R4. (Hey, a headbutt's a headbutt;) )

The one thing that struck me when i saw it in the cinema, and something i've never complained of before, was how loud it was. It seriously gave me headache. So i can't wait to hear it in dts:D .

I had no real gripe with this movie just as good as the first and perfect for a soggy afternoon.

within the space of a month i watched MR three times, as mates and my cousin hadn't seen it -- and i can say it does get better with subsequent viewings. I'm not the kind of person who sits there and worries too much about plot holes, logic etc.. with these type of movies, i'm just there for the moment.

It does lose a bit of the 'magic/spark/comedy' from the first film, but in some ways it's better. The pace is very fast, and the time flies by. And many youngsters i know much prefer the sequel to the first one. Plus you should have seen the crowds in India while watching MR -- they loved it!! it ran for ages!! :)

I have to agree

first tmie at the movies I saw it I thought it was mildly entertaining with some duff moments and effects.

4 days later I saw it again when I took my younger brother and found myself actually enjoying it more

I thought both The Mummy films were entertaining rubbish and I won't be buying the dvd box set either.

I have to agree it does look better with a second viewing. Just one thing I just can't watch that bit where a scorpian is eaten, gross.

:p

Just finished watching it in DTS.... mmmmm.... nice... at the moment we've got no neighbours so I was ruthless with the volume.

It's an enjoyable romp. Some good action and had enough story to keep me interested. Not as bad as everyone said it was, but it ain't gonna win any awards.

Enjoyed the movie when I saw it the first time and enjoyed it on the DVD. The SFX are dodgy at times (the SK is real bad and the Mummy isn't as effective as in the first film), the humour at times falls flat on its face but if u want to just be plane entertained without having to put the brain into gear it is a great movie. It is not as good as the first though.

I wouldn't give this garbage another viewing, even if someone put a gun to my head!

My "favourite" line was Rachel Weiss' to the little kid.
"You're grounded!"
She's English, he's English and it's 1933, the MTV generation 50 years too early:rolleyes:

I'm all for a bit of mindless entertainment but the Mummy returns is a boil of the face of humanity.

I think it was the first film I've ever desparately wanted to leave half way through; and at 25yrs old, I've seen a fair few films at the cinema.
The only reason I didn't was because I didn't want it to look like I was leaving because my girlfriend was scared of the film. She wasn't (entirely) but she is a bit soft like that.

Oh actually there was also The Waterboy but I went to sleep instead.

maybe that's where the MTV Generation all started, in 1930's Upper Class England ??

I saw this for the first, and only, time last night. I thought the first movie was a reasonably enjoyable Indiana Jones wannabe.
The CGI was quite nice, the various baddies nasty, disgusting or cowardly as required. The purely comic characters were used sparingly and more or less appropriately.
The Mummy returns was too heavy on the farce, lacked even the minimal menace of the first and as for the dirigible and its pilot,
they were possibly the very worst plot device ever conceived.
Oh except for the silly little goblins in the oasis.

Did I say I didn't like the movie?

The Mummy Entertaining 6/10
The Mummy returns Total Rubbish(how fast was the balloon with rockets on it:confused: ) 2/10,It seemed to me no thought other than write it quick had gone into the script at all,an obvious cash in of the success of the first film.
I don't think a sequel was planned, the success of the mummy took them by surprise so they dashed anything out for the money.

I actually saw it yesterday for the time and I have to say niether the first of second were as bad as I thought they were going to be. They were fast paced, plenty going on full of SFX and action. It passed the time and wasnt boring. However, that's all they are - popcorn flicks and I cant see myself watching either of these films again until in 3 years time when they are the christmas day film. I would certainly never ever buy either of these films on DVD.

They are also both full of inconsistencies, plot holes and questionable SFX but they are too easy to slate - I'd image they are ideal christmas pressies for 10/11/12 year olds though but I honestly cant see anyone much older gaining that much enjoyment and certainly not watch them repeatedly.

Watched it this afternoon with the kids and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.
It is a great easy to watch fun film and I can recommend the region 4 box set with DTS and that headbutt.

I wouldn't mind seeing another Mummy film but I think they would need to drop some of the characters. Perhaps just have Imhotep against some different "heroes".

You know, it's funny reading everyone's comments on this film. After a hard week, kick back, sink a few beers and chill out - then watch this movie. You'll enjoy it.
You guys are too tense.

Guy's, guy's, guy's, no more anti-mummy posts please, i posted the mini-review because i wanted to know if other people found the same as i did (that it improves after a few showings). I know a majority of you out there don't like this film, you've already voiced your opinions in many other threads on this subject.

Don't know about the rest of you, but I often see a movie at the cinema - and if its disappointing (as The Mummy Returns was) I will decide I definately won't get it on dvd.

Then a few months later there are adverts for its dvd release. It shows all the same old stuff from the original trailer etc. - and it doesn't look bad.

And - damn my weak will power - I end up buying the dvd whenever I see it for less that the rrp. I probably watch it again, and again, and convince myself that the film's not as bad as I first thought, and was well worth my hard earned cash.

What a sucker.

To be honest, The Mummy Returns doesn't look as bad as I remember, and compared to some of the dross thats been released, its pretty good. You know - I might just get it!!!

Damn - its happening again

Am i the only one who enjoyed this at the cinema then??. I must admit the only reason i went to see it was i had a internet project that i had to do and it wasn't working so i went to see this instead. I really liked it, i thought it was a damn sight better than Tomb Raider.

Simple, enjoyable popcorn fodder.:D

MR was without doubt the loudest film I've ever seen in the cinema, skull splitting stuff that left me with a headache and my ears ringing. It was great! :)
