Hi all,

I have two Dell Latitude laptops which I want to try and get communicating with each other. One has a Netgear 802.11b wireless pcmcia card, the other has a built in wireless reciever.

Is it possible to get them communicating with each other? I have tried using the XP wireless networking wizard which asks me to use a USB flash drive. Everything seemed to go ok but neither laptop would recieve the wirelss signal.

Is it possible to do this with my setup?

Cheers

I'm not a wireless expert, so please feel free to treat this with the contempt it may deserve. But, I was always of the understanding that for wireless comms to succeed you need to have some sort of wireless access point which all participating devices need to connect to in order to be able to see each other. I don't think that you can take two wireless devices and configure them to talk to each other in the same way that you would use a cross-over cable with the equivalent wired solution.

Yes you can, you just configure both cards to use ad-hoc mode rather than infrastructure :)

Can you ad-hoc and still receive the internet connection from the wireless access point?

Never used ad-hoc TBH, but I doubt it. Why would you need to though, if you have machines connected via an access point they should be able to talk to eachother too.

ChrisNo, setting up for one prevents you using the other. If you have a WAP, then you dont need P2P wirelss anyway, as the 2 can share thru the WAP.

Really?

Wonder how I get that working ......

once both are connected to the wap, enable file shring on each & you should see them in the my network places. provided they are both set to the same workgroup.
