It don't know if it's been mentioned before, but I've just seen Battle Royale on Play for 21st January, for £14.99. The BBFC website states that Tartan hold the rights for it (from the video trailer), but it seems quite short notice for it to be released without it yet been classified for a DVD release with the BBFC.
Anyone heard yet what kind of treatment this is getting? I've got the R3, but can imagine that I'll stick with it. Does the BBFC still cut any footage of butterfly knives?

As fas as I'm aware you're not allowed to show a butterfly knife being opened (hence the cuts to Face Off)
Tartan eh? Should be something to look forward to
Must admit I held of buying the r3 on account of it being non-anamorphic, but when I watched the film in the cinema last month and the Metro-Tartan label popped up, I thought r3 it is!
BTW if it's uncut in the cinema (which it was) then why would it get cut for the video/DVD release!
Oh and Face/Off was cut pre-new ruling that states 'everything' tends to get passed for an 18.

That last bit was a joke, right?
Not at all! Feel free to enlighten me but I haven't heard of a film getting cut for an 18 cert in a long time!

Well 18 cert films do most certainly still get cut (e.g. cinema release of "Baise Moi"; video releases of "Cannibal Holocaust", "I Spit on Your Grave") but butterfly knives etc shouldn't get targetted for cuts.... in theory at least.

OK, here goes!
Iron Fisted Monk
Re-Animator
Blood Feast
Baise Moi
I Spit On You Grave
New York Ripper
Last House On The Left
Sick:The Life & Death Of Bob Flanagan Supermasochist
Cannibal Holocaust
Have all recently been cut for cinema or DVD release :(
Ok, but ain't all those either distributor cuts or mandatory cuts for the two bugbear's of the BBFC; animal cruelty and sexual violence. Hence the inverted commas around everything in my initial post.
...but I should have been more specific - I was chiefly referring to the glorification of weapons (butterfly knifes, nunchakus etc.) that the BBFC no longer have a problem with.

I stand corrected - I sthought that the BBFC still had probs with Butterfly knives (although had eased up on nunchukas)
Good news anyway (except for the Tartan thing of course)
So what's the difference between the now available R3 and the tartan R2?
Are tartan licensing the film from whoever did the R3 or are they going to cock it up themselves?

Well I'm not sure I'd describe the act of deliberately nailing your own knob to a board    as "sexual violence" !! The BBFC claim that it is "likely to cause imitation in viewers" - are they completely mad??

Knowing Tartan, it will retail at £19.99, have an anamorphic transfer which somehow manages to be worse than the non-anamorphic R3, with very little in the way of extras.

I have the sleeve for the Tartan R2 version here in front of me, it's a bit thin on the ground extras wise, you get Anamorphic Widescreen, Filmographies, Trailer, Stills Gallery, Film Notes and Tartan Asia Extreme Trailers. It's Region 0 with a running time of 109 minutes. Japanese language with English subtitles.

No DTS, then? Do they carry over the graphics from the R3. I think it looks good, but I can't look at school photos in the same light again.

Maybe they'll try and put it through as a 12, for the Yoof market! :D

So other than the anamorphic transfer which will more than likely offer no benefit over the R3 judging by their past transfers, theres no real reason to go for the Tartan version.
The Filmographies will more than likely be a filmography for the director & Beat as all the other cast members were unknowns.
The stills gallery will probably still shots taken from the film.
The trailer & film notes are already on the R3.
Which just leaves Tartans own trailers.
Plus its double the price of the R3.
The Japanese version is the best one to go for, but its expensive.
Not to mention the DTS track on the r3
