There’s a very real possibility that I can’t operate the forums search tool because I really expected there to be a thread about the new Showtime ‘dramedy’ Weeds.

Several of the reviews of this show have drawn parallels with Desperate Housewives because of its suburban setting but this is not Wisteria lane. Mary-Louise Parker plays the role of Nancy Botwin, a recently widowed mother of two sons. Her financial circumstances mean she turned to dealing pot in her middle class California town.

It a cut above the usual US comedy show, and in many respects it reminded me of the HBO show ‘Entourage’. It probably won’t appeal to the die hard Friends and Joey fans but if you can accept the fact that in the real world people swear and aren’t always that nice to each other then you will probably enjoy it, it’s certainly the funniest US show I’ve since Entourage or Arrested Development.

Has anyone else see this, and if so what did you think?

I watched it last night.

It was really good. Had me in stitches most of the time.

Saw it this afternoon, brilliant, unfortunately you need to have half a brain cell to understand the humor, so I give a season at best. :(
On the upside Mary-Louise Parker is a fine looking women. :n0rty:

I know what you mean, how many series have we had of “According to Jim” or “The King of Queens” when ‘better’ shows get cancelled. I appreciate that it is a matter of taste and ultimately it does all come down to ratings but it seems that networks like Showtime and HBO are trying to put better written, better acted and better directed shows on US television.

I hope you’re wrong about Weeds dieing quickly (no pun intended) but the fact that Entourage has been picked up for a third series suggests that there is a market for these higher quality shows. I'd much rather have 8 episodes of Entourage or Weeds in a year the 22 episodes of Joey or Friends. I certainly am looking forward to this next week.

As for Ms Parker, I’ve been a bit of a fan of hers for while, more so after her run in The West Wing. Not only is a very good actress, but the scene in the car park after her son’s soccer practise… my god that women looks good.

I missed this as my hotel does not have Showtime :( It seems that this is basically the replacement for Dead Like Me and probably is aimed at a similar audience. Will probably be Showtimes biggest show and therefore get cut :|

Just watched this last night - very impressed! Nice to see a US network airing this kind of subversive (for the US) programming... Here's hoping it can sustain the same quality over its run and not get too bogged down in the melodramatics (as in the final scenes of the 1st episode)

King of Queens is pretty good ...

It's fantastic, one of the best sitcoms of recent years along with ELR and Arrested Development. It's not as good as it used to be but it's still hilarious.

Watched Weeds, didn't find it funny. Hopefully it'll improve

I won't be watching this, ever. Liberal bull****.

To make her a cocaine or heroin dealer would be really daring. As it is, this is about as hackneyed as a stand-up comic's every other word being 'roach'. Put as many references to soft drugs in as you can, that'll get the youth market on your side all right -- and of course, it's all so harmless, isn't it?

Bubble
05-10-2005, 10:39

was thinking the same thing... it's hardly aimed at the youth market... but then if you'd seen it, you'd know that, wouldn't you Dene?Fair enough, but haven't all TV/film enthusiasts passed judgement on stuff we haven't seen at some time or another? (For example) I've never watched Heartbeat or Midsomer Murders, but feel safe enough labelling them crud.

I simply feel that placing (presumably!) fairly innocuous references to soft drugs in the media is a self-consciously 'cool' thing to do, and it was only a matter of time before a whole programme was based around it. I won't be lending it my support, but of course that's just that way I feel about it.

So long as recreational drugs are regarded as cool -- and let's face it, they are -- then there will be a drugs problem. And cool is quite possibly the worst thing anyone or anything could be labelled, because it effectively means "to be respected by everyone, without having done anything at all to deserve it".

Who started in with this calling things 'cool' anyway? It must be a fairly recent development. Whoever it was deserves a good Jack Regan-style kicking IMO (not literally BTW, before anyone accuses me of advocating violence).

LooNaTiK
05-10-2005, 12:35
i see your point Dene, but you haven't seen the show... it's like never watching Trainspotting and assuming it glorifies heroin use. not every aspect of the show makes light of cannabis use, in fact there is very little cannabis use in it...

the main plots revolve around the mother (who doesnt smoke), who is coming to terms with loss of her husband, then there's trouble she gets into from dealing... rival dealers, cop problems, finance and so on... there is also the son who is in love with a deaf girl and in need of a father figure, the waster brother in law who's often in trouble with the law, the younger son who has behavioural problems, the woman who's just had both her breasts removed and is undergoing chemotherapy, her husband who is having an affair.

it's not just about funny situtations people get into when they're stoned... it's not IDeal with Johnny Vegas for an American audience.

im not going to convince you, im not even trying to, but i urge you to get your facts straight before commenting on something you dont really understand, or havent seen.

Didn't realise it's aired and finished in the States already.

Love the subtle use of music in some of the eps. When Celia's on the toilet in ep 4 was very funny.

I like this kind of subverted humour. I don't find it 'lol' funny but amusing, it certainly makes you appreciate the writing efforts nvolved. Mary Louise Parker, phhwoaar. Always was a fan of her in West Wing but here she even yummier.

Trying to track down the music used in the middle of ep 4 where everyone is sleeping. Nice little segment that again made all the more poignant because of the music.

Hope they commission a (longer) second season.

Best new show of 2005 definetly.

Speaking of soundtrack, does anyone know the name of the song they played on the show about 2 weeks ago?

it contained the lyrics " *********' work" (or words to that effect) a lot. QUITE a lot actually. thought it was quite good.

anybody?

Just watched the last episode last night. Absolutely great series. My Mary-Louise Parker crush continued to grow rapidly throught the series too.

My only criticism is that i think it would work better as a 45-50 minute programme but you cant have everything.

SHOWTIME FIRES UP A SECOND SEASON OF HIT COMEDY WEEDS

Twelve New Episodes of Critically Acclaimed Series Starring Golden Globe Nominees Mary-Louise Parker and Elizabeth Perkins Begins Production in Spring For Summer Debut

LOS ANGELES, CA (December 13, 2005) – On the heels of today's three Golden Globe® nominations including Best Television Series-Musical or Comedy, SHOWTIME greenlighted 12 new episodes of WEEDS for a second season, it was announced today by Showtime's President of Entertainment Robert Greenblatt. One of the most talked about comedy series of the year, WEEDS debuted last August to critical raves. A production of Lions Gate Television, the series stars Mary-Louise Parker, Elizabeth Perkins, Tonye Patano, Romany Malco, Justin Kirk and Kevin Nealon. Created and executive produced by Emmy® Award winner Jenji Kohan, the series will resume production in Los Angeles this spring and premiere this summer.

"WEEDS represents the best of what Showtime can offer -- a provocative, complex, richly textured show about contemporary family life that also manages to be incredibly relatable," said Greenblatt. "And its execution -- writing, acting, directing, and production values -- are at the very top of the food chain. This show makes our network shine. We were addicted the minute we saw the pilot."

"The critical and popular response to WEEDS has been tremendous and we're thrilled to be moving forward on the second season," said Kevin Beggs, President of Programming and Production, Lions Gate Television. "We're extremely proud of our creative team headed by Jenji Kohan, and we salute our extraordinary cast."

At today's Golden Globe nominations, Mary-Louise Parker was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series-Musical or Comedy and Elizabeth Perkins was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.

WEEDS, a single-camera comedy that exposes the dirty little secrets that lie behind the pristine lawns and shiny closed doors of homes in the fictional town of Agrestic, California. Parker stars as a suburban mom who resorts to selling weed to support her family after her husband unexpectedly dies. Perkins stars as the uptight head of the PTA and Nealon plays a city councilman and one of Parker's regular customers. Parker's character finds unusual support and solace from an African American family as she begins to pursue her burgeoning business. Produced by Lions Gate Television in association with Tilted Productions, WEEDS is executive produced by Jenji Kohan ("Friends").

I was very surprised to see that the first four episodes of the new season are floating around.

I failed to exercise any level of self control last night and watched all four, and I was in stitches several times during each episode. I was afraid that this series wouldn't live up to it's first season, but on the basis of the first four episodes it looks to be picking up where it left off (The admissions direction at the Rabbinical School that Andy wants to attend is particularly entertaining, and easy on the eye!).

I'm just disappointed that after waiting months for the second series I now have to wait another month to see a new episode.

I have a pretty cool Uncle as it is who's shown me around the Red Light District in Amsterdam but he never let me sample the talent. Shane you lucky beggar although a bit close to the bone and a tad perverse :suspect:

There's times when the profanity and vulgarity that comes out of these characters mouths is so OTT that it's just ridiculous. Like Doug's dilemma of wanting his wife, who makes his kids lunches, to suck his balls or Dean's outrageous outburst at his firing.

Anyword on initial ratings for this season? I hope it's doing well.

Who was the guy on the Segway right at the end?

I believe he's just some guy Celia suggested to Nancy to shack up with when she was handing out her campaign literature at the beginning of the ep. Nancy mentioned that he was in his 60's and rode a segway, therefore: 'hell no!'.

Hard to believe it's nearly over for another year. Seems like only yesterday i was psyching myself for the series to start. Full marks to Showtime for keeping it coming week after week and no silly breaks.

I really like how this season has developed, i guess being limited to only 12 episodes has its restrictions but i think sometimes it works for the better as each character and the central premise has advanced a lot in the 11 episodes since it started. There's no Lost-like plot devices or over egging of one particular situation.

Here's hoping for a S3 and decent DVD release. I'm still gutted they ****** the first season up.

Didn't realise until today but S2 soundtrack was release last year. If it's anything like the first one it'll be worth a punt.

Season 2, episode 1 turned up on my HD box as part of Anytime on TV, available until the 8th, so I guess it'll start on Sky One/HD soon after...

It does say the extras include "Agrestic herbal recipes", looks to be the exact same extras as the R1 release.

I'm hoping Lionsgate learned from their mistake with the R1 dvd from last year and will be releasing season 2 in widescreen, then I can get it faster.

I think they deliberately kept the widescreen presentation for their Bluray release. :suspect:

Season 2 should be out in July in the US to tie in with the start of season 3 in August.

Just Finished the 2nd season and wow that ending was edge of your seat stuff, looks like Silis (sp?) has messed up bigtime.

There are so many cliffhangers, I need Season 3 ASAP.

So glad I gave weeds a try, would have hated to miss this comedy gold.

Any word yet if the S1 DVD is going to released anywhere in Widescreen?

I see the US S1 DVD is finally in its proper ratio.
