hi, my cousin has asked me to find him the best base unit i can for upto £700-£800. he allready has a 19inch TFT so just the base unit is needed.

he wants it to last a good few years(his last one has lasted 5 years now, 800mhz,128ram ect)

he wants it for his kids to play some games on, internet and homework.

i was looking at dell but the cheaper ones you have to have a monitor with and you don't get a very good graphics card.

i was thinking a and 64biit CPU, 1gig of ram, 160gig+ HD, dvd-rw, something like a 9800 or 6600 graphics card(allthough i'm not sure they would need something that good)

so can anyone say what places are good to look?

thanks

I put a few suppliers in this recent forums post (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=382230). Most of the online configurators enable you subtract the cost of the monitor. Otherwise you'll need to phone them.

thanks for the suggestions :)

mesh look good, i've suggested one from JAL as they are only a couple of miles away so he could go and pick it up. will point him in the direction of the mesh one allthough the sli one may be a bit much for his needs.

will take a look at the others now :)

There was a review of £799 PCs in September's issue of PCW magazine - Both Mesh and Evesham do get consistantly good reviews (- I've owned or had clients buy various PCs from these two suppliers in the past so feel relatively safe recommending them). As far as this latest review, Mesh got editor's choice and the Nethighstreet and Carerra both got highly commended. The Jal system was summarised as 'good package for the money, but isn't outstanding in any way'.

Naturally, they were all costed with their choice of monitor (17" or 19" TFT) so your cousin will be able to get a better specced based unit for the money.
