What's better about the French release over the UK one?

...the two-DVD French Edition Collector features the longer (by some 9 minutes) Director's Cut and English and French dts soundtracks, plus generous extras...

Now, as I remember the UK version features ONLY the Director's cut. This means you cannot watch the theatrical version if you buy the UK DVD. There's no seamless branching.

Suppose you did want to watch the original version?

Well, the French DVD has the two versions on separate DVDs. That's what makes it a winner in my opinion. Now I can only hope it's not featured with forced french subtitles...

To be honest I thought the 'extra scenes' were barely noticeable - didn't add a whole lot to the plot really.

The only way you could notice the extra scenes are the horrible quality of these compared to the theatrical scenes. I got rid of mine. The DTS track is good though.

That's why I went for the French disc as it's got the original verion of the film as well.

Looks like I won't buy this version after all.
1: Forced french subtitles.
2: Not very good image according to: http://www.dvdrama.net/fiche.php3?1999
3: Apparently there is a lot of language that would be translated into french that wasn't english in the first place. I wonder how the UK DVD tackled that. Was it in the image or was it on an optional subtitle track?

Please give me some info on the number three questios.

Thankyou.

Ericf

Edit:
Well the Australian version hasn't been released yet. It should come out sometime next year. After all, all the other regions seem to get it. I might wait and see how it will be.

Watched this last night and:

1. I watched it with the sub titles off

2. Can't fault the image of the original version. The additional scenes on the SE are of a lower quality, but that's why I went for the french 2 disc as it has the original version.

3.

Cornelius, can you clarify which disk/version you watched? I had a very quick look at my copy at lunchtime, using the disk labelled "Edition Collector" and I could NOT switch off the French subtitles.

That plus the awful digi-pack style case and I think I'll try my arm at a refund from Amazon.fr.....

I can turn off the subtitles for both discs. I actually watched the original version last night. I,ve just checked the 'Edition Collector' and I can turn off the subs for that as well. I used my players remote to turn them off as there doesn't appear to be an option in the disc menus. Can't see why you can't turn them off, what player have you got?

Agree with you about the packaging, it's the only complaint I've got about this set.

So what player do you have? Is it a DVD-ROM? The DVDrama article states that the subtitles aren't removable, so they obviously couldn't remove them.

I have a Pioneer DV-535 myself. Will removing the subtitles work for me? I really don't want to order anything that I don't want to watch and I will not have a real chance to return it since I really don't speak french and it would be a real bother.

How did you remove the subtitles? Just with the remote? I have heard that some players can "unlock" the forced subtitles but I'm not sure which ones.
Please help.

On a nother note: I like digipacks. Sure they will take more damage but they contain les plastic and are degradable which is good for the environment...

Edit: How do they deal with the parts of the movie where they speak in ancient languages? These parts must be translated to be understood. Is the translation in the picture? If there is no text in the image and there are no subtitles to translate this then this version is not an option for anyone. I think.
End. Edit

Neither my Samsung 709 or PowerDVD on the PC would allow me to remove the subs, so I've sent it back to Amazon.fr today in the hope of a refund. I just hope we get the extras on another release (R4?) at some time.

Ericf - I have a Sony 525. On the remote I press the subtitles button and I can select French 1, French 2 or Off.

Hi guys,

just some news about the Australian release of this film. Is not likely to happen in the near future as there is a legal issue with the rights. The company which owns them does not want to give them to Australia, that is the reason that there has never been a Region 4 and there will not be one soon. So the guys from Region 4 are buying them here. I know it because a friend from OZ had to buy it from here as there will be none available any time soon. By the way I got from play an amary case not the other one.

The subtitles can be switched off on the DD audio but not the DTS, makes no sense

It's really important if I'm going to buy this version or stick with the UK DVD.

Please help.

Thanks

Further to my earlier post, I have had another look at the discs and now I cannot remove the subtitles from any of the versions.

After watching the opening ten minutes the only plus point I can now see for the French version is, the added scenes are as good as the rest of the film and not of the dodgy quality witnessed in the UK version.

With the subtitles off you don't know what their saying when they speak in the ancient language.

With the subtitles on you don't know what their saying again unless you can read french.

Hope that clears that up for you:)

The subs for the Egyptian speaking scenes are player generated on my UK version of Stargate, they're not burnt in, so the French version will display French subs only for those scenes!! :(

Thankyou. I was worried about that.

UK it will be for now.
