Basically I'm having no luck with my wireless network after spending countless hours with no results.

Soooo was wondering if I could connect the xbox by....

Connecting it directly to the router (which would not be connected to the phone socket downstairs but not the PC)

and if so

Could I then use my old adsl usb modem to get my PC upstairs connected tp the internet at the same time? (using the phone socket upstairs)

Weird I know but getting desperate

Not sure what you are saying with phone sockets, but anyway, the easiest way would be to use a network cable from the xbox to the wireless router. Please clarify the other steps you are trying to achieve.

Yep thats it basically, just run the network cable from the xbox to the router with no PC involved. Would thie work ok?

And could I still have the PC online at the same time (from a different socket obviously) using a USB modem?

well what are you doing with the xbox? it would not be able to route anywhere.

Trying to get online with xbox live is my aim. Wouldnt the router just treat the xbox as another client wanting to access the internet?

I presume your setup would be this:

Internet
|
ADSL Router
/ \
Xbox PC

Just plug your pc and xbox into the router and both will connect to the internet

You can't do what you are suggesting. At least, not if you want both connected at the same time.

What you could do is:

Connect the router to your Pohne line by the wire. Connect your XBox to your router by wire, and connect the pc to the router wirelessly. That will work OK and the XBox will be A-OK connecting to live like that.

Cant get the wireless working so I assume I can only have one connected at a time. A bit of a pain but I'll do it that way for now until the wireless starts playing ball

Hi Nicola, havent even got as far as attaching anything to the xbox yet! I have 3 pieces of wireless networking equipment:

Wireless Router - Safecom SWAMR-54108
Asus WLAN card on the PC
Asus portable wireless access point (WL-330G)

You'd think using either the router or card I'd be able to connect to the access point and away we go but nothing I try seems to work. Just cant get a wireless network set up for some reason. I can get to the stage where I can see the network to connect to but the adaptor says "connecting to AP" but then says its cant establish a connection. I've got no security set so thats not the problem, the SSID names are the same.

So it looks like for the moment I'm going to be moving the WAP downstairs whenever I want to use xbox live losing my pc internet connection till I move it upstairs again!

Have you tried to set up the WAP through the router and allowed the wireless MAC address, the WAP has two? Look to see what if it is connected through the router, then connect it to the XBox.

Ok my wireless is now working! Just not the way I intended..

Got the router connecetd to the xbox downstairs and now my WLAN card on my PC can access it and I'm ready to go. Really wanted it working the other way around using my wireless AP downstairs but it didnt want to know about it!

Incidentally now I have the xbox hard wired to the router and my PC wirelessly connected can I now ftp files back and forth between the 2? Not sure how I get access to it, I kow the IP address the router has given it but cant ping the xbox?

you need a "special" xbox to beable to FTP to it

it is special, think its just me being thick as I have the special part disabled at the moment as I've been setting up xblive. When I reactivate it I would imagine I can access it through the IP address?

Yes, providing you have an FTP client running on it - like in evox or xbmc.
