I have a Mesh Fireblade SLI AMD system - its a few months old
Currently has 1024 MB of Ram and I know it has 2 spare slots
Would like to put extra 1024 in - what memory would I need
I think the motherboard is ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe Mainboard - DDR400
Easiest way is to go onto Crucial Memory (EU) (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-582776-5048129) and use their memory configurator wizard - just tell it what mobo/system you have it it will list all compatible memory

So simple
Been recommended 512MB—CT6464Z40B

Just for info - what difference would 2048 make over 1024

Its very noticable if you do a lot of Video Editing or large Photoshop work. I'm not a gamer so couldnt comment on gaming performance, but I would expect it helps some what too.

Having opened my PC up just to get be nosey prior to memory arriving I notice that I do indeed have 4 bankd for memory but the current memory has gaps between each stick
So it goes memory stick - empty slot - memory stick - empty slot
I take it I just put the new ones in the empty slots ? or should I have
Old memory - old memory - new memory - new memory
old - old - new - new would be your best bet for getting dual channel to work.
don't know why they've installed like they have.

probably because dual channel (assuming it is that) probably requires one in bank 0 or 1 and 1 in the matching bank 2 or 3.
Putting both in the first 2 slots on their own would probably result in single channel operation

Because that's the way dual channel is set up on that M/B??
A quick look at some pictures of the board indicates the memory slots are blue - black - blue - black... blue + blue is one set of dual channel, black + black is the other set.
Let's quote from the manual!
"When using two DDR DIMM modules, install into DIMM_A1 and DIMM_B1 slots only."
Numbering the slots 1-4 across the board, A1 is 1 and B1 is 3. The first two slots are one channel, and the second two slots are the other channel. To run in dual channel mode, you need 1 stick in each channel - hence the 1+3 config.
EDIT: So old - new - old - new would be the "correct" way to get dual channel working (although with 512Mb sticks I bet it would work any old way round - they're prety much alike these days)

Thanks for that

Not seen that before, thought all mobos had banks arranged in the same order
Nah, dual channel works different for some reason LOL
