Hi,

I am trying to help an online petition out as I and many of my friends want to see Ice Hockey back on Sky. We need about 5000 sigs, but have about 340 so far. Can you guys help by filling in your details please? Ice Hockey on Sky would be so great.

The Petition is here (http://www.petitiononline.com/hockeytv/petition.html)

Thanks in advance,

Rob

I've always thought that ice hockey was a bad idea as far as televised sport goes. I can never keep up with what the puck is going on. :)

Thanks mate. I am hoping that it will just drum up a bit of support for the guys. I am hoping people who don't even like hockey will sign it as a favour.

You're right about the fighting though, however I am yet to see my first proper hockey fight. Mostly its just handbags in the UK.

I used to enjoy the Hockey on a Thursday & Saturday night on Sky. I can remember when they showed the Steelers European games as well. Bring it back.

Nice to see NASN supporting British based sport as well.

I get NASN mostly for NHL, and here we still have the rink (although thanks to Tesco  we won't for 2 years pretty soon) and I must admit it sometimes makes this Chicago boy proud to sit and watch the Redskins. They actually know how to skate well and intelligently play a game I played (unlike the London pro team once or twice I saw them in Docklands) from pretty much before I could walk and ( MOM IF READING THIS LOOK AWAY NOW ) which almost cost me an eye three or four times as well

Streatham have had a solid start to the season ( +10 GA with only 4 allowed ) but only won two of four :(

Still looks to be an interesting season though ...

edit just noticed we're averaging 20+ penalty minutes a game already

With the new UK Ice Hockey season starting shortly, is there anyone looking forward to it as much as me and Rob?

Ice Hockey is the only sport I find entertaining, so the new season won't be here soon enough for me. I'm looking forward to the new Panthers team and see how we do this year.

Used to be a huge fan of the steelers in the mid 90's. Had a season ticket and everything, I beleive I even sponsered the helmet of Tommy Plummer....which meant I got a christmas card from him...lol. Then I moved away to go to uni and haven't been to a game for a long, long time. Would love to see it back on Sky.

Ah, the Steelers Vs Panthers games at the Sheffield arena used to be classic!

There were a few good ones last season, most humiliating one was the Steelers thrashing us on our own Ice.

The team we had to watch out for last season was Newcastle, because Andre Payette and Jeremy Cornish are two players I wouldn't like to mess with. Newcastle also came into the league as the outsiders and won the playoff finals. Was a deserved win though. They worked hard and played hard.

Ice Hockey is by far my favourite sport.

Grace, speed, power, skill. It has it all. Even agression. Though, i hasten to add people who think Hockey is only about fighting really haven't seen enough of the sport. The old adage "I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out" is not so relevent in today's faster paced new style NHL (http://www.nhl.com/). Ofcourse, they'll always be fights as the game allows that, but to say hockey is about fights undermines the supreme skill that top players display and the sport as whole.

I watch my NHL games through NASN (http://www.nasn.com/) and pay about £10 a month. They show some games throughout the week, but every saturday night (i'm talking late night around 12am or 1am) they have a hockey double which feeds live from Hockey Night In Canada, so that's two live games in a row. But to be honest, the constant adverts at every break opportunity on NASN really grate and i much prefer CH5's hockey coverage on wednesday nights because they analyse the game when other channels go to an ad break or period break. I think CH5 do a terrific job. I wish NASN not only took the live feed but also had a studio panel to cut back to like CH5 to avoid the annoying and constant adverts.

Towards the latter end of last season NASN started showing UK ELITE league game highlights as well on a friday show. So i think they have the ice hockey base covered. If Sky want to show ice hockey they have to pay up and start buying the rights.

In the UK, I used to support the London Racers (http://www.londonracers.com/), the pro team in the Elite league (and went regularly to see home games at Lee Valley Ice Centre), until they bowed out due to a despute with Lee Valley about the rink/plexi glass conditions when a fan was injured and the team disbanded with the players going off to various other hockey clubs around the league. I'm hugely disappointed by that, but remain hopeful that in the future London will see home ice again.

On the NHL front i support the Pittsburgh Penguins (http://www.pittsburghpenguins.com/index.php) (as they were the team that won the Stanley Cup when i first the discovered NHL in 1991, 1992) with superstars like Lemieux, Jagr, Stevens, etc. This season they have fresh young talent with the likes of No draft pick Sidney Crosby in his 2nd NHL year, Marc Andre Fluery our rookie goalie, and we're soon to be joined by Russian sensation Evgeni Malkin (who's fled his Russian team to play for The Pens). Hopefully we'll be play-off contenders this year.

Was going to say NASN would be a better bet than Sky Sports given their coverage of the NHL and then saw the link above. Setanta Sports pack is getting better and better.

Is your O/H North American. I didn't realise the womens leagues over here used imports. The Nottingham womens team is stuggling to stay up due to lack of funding.

How was the NHL game BTW, can't wait to see an NHL game. You should come to a Basingstoke away game up here at the NIC. Be nice to say hello.

Yes, she's canadian, as are a couple of other players on her team. She used to play for http://www.ottawaraiders.ca/

The womens league here is split

Premier League
North Div 1
South Div 2

But so many southern teams that North starts in Peterboro'. I see that Notts women are doing pretty badly a 30-1 drumming wasn't it? My mates bro coaches women in Sheffield and also assis coach for Team GB but it's totally different here. The OH trains once a week for 90mins. She used to train for 3 hours everyday (except for Monday) in Canada.

It wasn't a case of coming over here to play, she took a bit of a break over the last year or so before deciding she wanted to try and find somewhere here to play. Totally different game here apparantly.

I don't follow Basingstoke. We went to a game to watch one of the guys who was on the mens team at her university. I get roped into watching enough on NASN and now practices and games to look forward to

The NHL game was good - Ottawa v Tampa. Really nice stadium and nice and warm :) Was quite high up so good view but not close to the action.

All stars game on tonight, caught some of the skills all stars comp last night. New jerseys will be used in the game tonight, they've adopted a new more fitted shirt.

I was at the Spectrum last night when the Flames returned from their first leg win over Slough. They seemed rather happy.

Guess the petition worked then ;).

Did anyone catch the Elite league show on Sky Sports Extra this evening?

It showed the match between my own Nottingham Panthers and the Sheffield Squeelers.

Would be very interested to know what new viewers to the game thought of the whole experience. Sky did a great job. I think they need to make the rules clearer for those at home who don't understand them though.

It's on before I get home unfortunately. The OH did watch it and said it was quite good, and coming from a canadian hockey player, I guess it couldn't have been too bad.

Saw Bison play last night, and caught up with some players afterwards.

Oh, and NHL next weekend CANNOT WAIT!!! Managed to get front row top tier for first night, and front row plexi for the Sunday.

Woooohooooo

Coolio,

Im staying on Belgrave Road in Pimlico (sp?) for the Sunday game. Is there much to do in that area ? Going with 3 mates, should be there around lunch time. Wouldn't mind spending afternoon in a few decent pubs. Maybe a decent sports bar after the game.

Are we far away from the 02 ?

Coolio
24-09-2007, 19:11
Probably best to head into the west end which isn't that far, and is on the way to the Dome. The O2 has a lot of bars and restaurants and will be full of people going to the games. I also know that A LOT of people are going to the Maple Leaf in Covent Garden including a lot of fans from California coming to support their teams. You can just then walk over Waterloo bridge from there and head to N Greenwich on the Jubilee.

There is a sports cafe in Piccidily as well, altho only a few pieces of hockey memoralbilia, the Leaf would be the best place to go if you want a big crowd all excited about the hockey.

I believe the first game is going to be live on NASN, and shown on 'Hockey Night in Canada', the Stanley Cup will also be at the game, with the Under 10 Streatham and Slough kids doing an exhibition game between periods for the crowd.

Always had a passing interest in Ice Hockey (due to the Steelers) so this weekend i'm down in Basingstoke to visit the girlfriend and they are playing the Steelers on Saturday. Now i've never been to a Ice Hockey game before so i thought i'd take this opportunity to go and take the gf but just wondered if i would be able to pay on the door or would i be better off buying in advance (dunno how big the Basingstoke ice rink is!!)

Not sure about your away support, but this game will deffo not sell out. Paying for tickets on the night is the way most do it down at Basingstoke., so that should be fine.

One piece of friendly advice though, wrap up warm. Their rink is freezing.

And totally screwed at the moment. Seriously though, the rink is small compared to the capacity that Sheffield gets. It's about a tenner I think (I get my tickets free). But the rink, it's a mess, concrete coming through in patches, bad condensation on the plexi, and a haze on the ice. However, it's not usually that bad. I think they're supposed to be relaying the ice at the weekend anyway.

Well at least it wasn't a dull low scoring game!

Steelers 4-0 down after the first period
Steelers netminder Jody Lehman having a temper tantrum  after conceding the 6th and being subbed straightaway (cue comedy music/sound bytes from announcer)
Two Steelers goals in 14 seconds to, briefly, give me some hope at 6-3 but all to no avail.

First Ice Hockey game i've been to at least the other half was pleased because Basingstoke won. But i've gotta admit i still enjoyed the whole thing. The fans who were there (the announcer mentioned some NHL game at the O2 arena being on at the same time) seemed up for it and really get into it.

I'll have to take the other half to 'The House of Steel' now when they play Basingstoke!

*Oh and r.vernon your right the rink was blooming cold! Thanks for the tip off got scarf and gloves out the big wuss i am!

Lehman has stormed off in a couple of games so far this season. Their defence aren't doing their job and the other teams are taking advantage of this.

We've playing at home tonight against Steelers and I'm not looking forward to it. Out of all the teams, Steelers are one of the teams I don't get very excited to see.

But if we keep getting goals in tonight and Lehman walks, it'll be the highlight of the night I reckon.

And now it's all gone seriously Pete Tong at Basingstoke and Bracknell. Players threatening strike action, consotiums taking over, and estate agents wanting to buy teams they cannot afford. Quality :(
