I'm Billy no-mates again this weekend - so I thought I might go to see a movie called 'The Devils Backbone' (or something similar) All I know is that it's about some little kid who's holed up inside a deserted orphanage near the end of the Spanish Civil war. Ends up being a 'The Others' kind of movie, but better apparently.

Anyone here seen this movie - is it worth a watch?

I've not seen it but if any cinema near me was actually showing it i'd be there like a shot!

So, yes it suppose to be very good. A return of form for the director ( I can't remember how to spell his name! ) who's first film the Vampire flim Cronos was excelent. He then went to Hollywood and made the less than great Mimic. After Devil's Backbone he's given Hollywood another go with Blade 2. And then he's making a film of the brilliant comicbook Hellboy.

Well, that plan was short-lived - the UCI only has about 15 screens - about 14 of which are showing Harry edited Potter

Sounds like it deserves a bigger audience, but as usual UCI and Showcase are only interested in the big hollywood releases. What can I do on Saturday night now :(

All the reviews I've seen seem to really like it, including that Ross bloke.:)

Go see it. Oustanding.

Horror/thriller/drama set in a childrens' refuge outside Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War.

One of the best films of the year so far. IMHO of course.

Anthony.

Saw this at Frightfest 2001 earlier this year. It's a must see. Very well acted, written and directed. The only flaw is that you can see the ending a mile off.

I'd recommend it, highly.

Convincing acting esp the main boys, not once did i think they were just reading their lines (see Harry Potty), the photography was excellent with some great uses of colour, musical score was used very well to highten the dramatics plus the Dolby EX surround helps pull you in; Violence was realistic & brutal; And the whole story tied together very well.

Roll on Blade 2...

Ciao Daliah.

Chronos is, but I'm not sure of the quality. It's released by Tartan in 1:33 ratio so may be panned and scanned. Anyone know?

I just watched it and its a very good film

Shame about the animated menu on the dvd has it made me think the film was going to be scary like the eye :suspect:

Top film though :D

The Chronos DVD from Tartan is a travesty. The picture does at times appear to be open matte, but at other times it certainly looks panned and scanned. As of yet, no-one has been able to confirm what's going on with it. (Even the guys from Tartan I spoke to didn't know!)

The film also suffers from massive light streaks every time there is an intense source of light on the screen (which is quite often in the latter parts) and this renders the film pretty much unwatchable.

agree, cronos is a class film but cant bring myself to buy another tartan disc....................... dont want to imagine how terrible it must be (although having tartans audition does give me an idea of what a stinker it could be)

This is nothing new from Tartan they have made some real stinkers from there Asian titles (as new forms mentioned audition)

I've decided not to buy there dvds anymore i'd rather buy a a bootleg then a real one :gag:

There is a rumoured 2-disc Special Edition in the works (which will come with a Cronos device) -

I have to be the only person not to like the Devil's Backbone :(

Found it slow and unstimualting which is a surprise as it is the type of film I normally love and can't quite put my finger on why

Maybe it was overhyped :)
