I'm a fan of John Carpenter, I like his older films more. I was looking forward to this but I wasn't expecting much from the bad vibes.

I think this was his worst film he's ever made. Really bad story, it's like watching somebody play the game Resident Evil! It's very boring and you don't care about what happens to the characters! I thought the soundtrack was also terrible which didn't do the film any justice!

There was good surround in the film but that's not enough to save it, not even good enough for demo disc on a home entertainment system.

With Vampires it's James Woods that saved it, as he give his character some depth, but nobody can save this film. Avoid this rubbish and wait for 6 months to arrive on DVD to rent!

I have to say I really enjoyed it! I know it's an action / sci-fi film in a VERY B-movie style, but I couldn't help but grin all the way through it! Some good action, a bit of gore, Natasha Henstridge and Ice Cube ass-kicking...what more could you want?

Some of the lines were admittedly as corny as the classic from They Live - "Brother, life's a bitch...and she's back in heat"!!! - but always good fun.

However, I suspect I may be in the minority with this positive view of the film!

Argh! Run away! It was GHASTLY! If it hadn't been for The 51st State, then this would be a contender for worst Hollywood flick of the year...

I too am a big fan of Carpenters old films and never expected this one to be any good. When viewing it I found to my surprise it was quite watchable up until the point when..

They escaped and decided to go back! What a bunch of muppets.

and from that point onwards I could not forgive its major shortcomings any longer.

not recommended.

Yeah, but they HAD to do that to try and save the world!

Ah well...

I saw this in Australia about 2 months ago.

Funny thing is that after getting the ticket and while I was going through the ticket check area the attendant said

"Sir, we have had very bad feedback on this film, so please be aware that if you don't like it, come out before it finishes and you can get a full refund".

I have been to many cinemas all over the world, but this was a first for me.

Saw this last week, half the audience got up and left about half way through.

We stayed to the end, the people I went with really hated it but I liked it in a trashy B movie kind of way, even if only for the line 'what will happen if we blow up the nuclear power station' ::D

Easily the worst film John Carpenter has ever made. I went tonight with an open mind although I'd heard bad things about the movie and I really tried to like it. Unfortunatly it's very difficult to find a good word to say about this abomination. The story is a mess (at one point we are in a flashback of a flashback of a flashback), the dialogue is terrible and the acting laughable by all concerned. As somebody else has already mentioned, you don't care for any of the characters and the action scenes are badly choreographed. It's sad really, how the mighty have fallen. Can anything rescue Carpenter now?

I also was extremely dissapointed in this. I ignored the bad reviews of vampires and I am glad I did because I really enjoy it, but Ghosts of Mars is very poor, silly storyline, poor acting and the ending, well nuff said.

Well thats enough to put anyone off watching it. Maybe I'll wait until it's in the bargain basement section somewhere.
I was gonna buy this too !!

I watched it recently and it wasn't very good.

I found it strangley watchable, partly because I thought it would have to improve at some point

Ice Cube gives a poor performance as does everyone else.

It is a vry poor movie and I would be highly annoyed if I had paid to see it (as much as it pains me to say it)... :(

I'm a huge fan of Carpenter & I'll watch pretty much anything he's involved with, but I'm afraid I have to agree with most of you. It's pretty poor.

However, the commentary track on the dvd with Carpenter & Natasha Henstridge is up there with the ones he does with Kurt Russell. The pair spend the entire track flirting & ripping the **** out of each other. It's far more entertaining than the film!

I was going to sell the dvd, but I'm keeping it now, purely on the strength of the commentary track. ;)

Interesting that the commentary on the film is better than film. I think John Carpenter is a great commentator. I'll have to rent when it's out on R2! Looking forward to his Starman: Special Edition with Jeff Bridges track.

I think Ice Cube would make a good Mr T in the film version of The A-Team!

ice cube has to be one of the worst actors in hollywood. his face has a constant look of consternation on it and his dialogue is always 'righteous gangsta speak'. If ever i see him or llcool j on the credits i keep on walking.

yeah the commentary is a good one, well worth a listen. I like directors who are honest. And i'm still a fan of Carpenter purely because of the commentaries he does, they more than make up for Escape From Los Angeles and this.

The film is strictly ok, if you have nothing else to do, but i didn't care, i simply can't take my eyes off Natasha -- IMO she is just drop dead gorgeous, and is one of the most attractive ladies on the screen!!! i'd watch her in anything no matter how poor it was!!

Ghosts of Mars is absolute garbage and it takes a lot for me to say that of any film. Carpenter has made some truly amazing films but when was the last time he actually made anything like a good one? Certainly nothing in the last 15 years or so has held any interest for me. I quite like schlocky B movie sci-fi/horror as long as there is some spark of invention but this was just drivel. I honestly can't think of anything positive to say about it. Don't even waste the rental money... go and buy Wild Wild West instead!

I watched this with low expectations, and yes its a 'bad' movie, but I still kind of enjoyed it. I just love John Carpenter movies, although its clear he's well past his peak. I like it for the same reasons as some of you. :D Natasha Henstridge is simply gorgeous. :norty: I also like Carpenter's commentaries, especially when he has someone alongside him. :)
