View Full Version : Loud beep when XP is loading

For the last few weeks, my PC has been making a loud beep when booting up. This is not the normal 'Beep on startup' type thing - it is coming from the external speakers and sounds when the Windows XP logo is on screen.
I've checked if it's a sound associated with an event in XP and it's not - it's before XP loads anyway so I don't think it's anything to do with that.
Any ideas ?

Do you use on-board sound, or do you have a dedicated soundcard in your setup?
Is it a laptop, sometimes get this on a laptop when the pcmcia cards start?

It's on board sound.
It's not a laptop.
The problem has only started in the last few weeks. It's weird - I don't see how it can be related to software I've installed as it happens before XP has even started up properly !

It could well be one of the processes that windows loads up on startup then - anything interesting in your processes task list?

Do you use Sophos at all? It does this if its over 3 months old and needs updating.
Usually the event log (start -> run -> eventvwr) will say what application is trying to get your attention.
Maybe one of your services have failed.
Run eventvwr and check to see if anything has failed

Thanks folks - will check eventvwr later and report back.

Ok - eventvwr listed two problem apps.
1. InCD - the help file wasn't properly installed. Fixed that. Still getting the beep (coudln't believe that would've caused it anyway).
2. "Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet: The network link is down. Check to make sure the network cable is properly connected." I don't have a network so don't need a network cable plugged in. Surely that can't be the problem ?
Anyone have any ideas how to get rid of (2) (short of plugging in a network cable !).

That wouldn't cause the beep either. You can simply disable the network card to stop that error though (Right click My Computer -> Manage -> Device manager -> Right click the network card -> Disable.)
Did you check the system log too?

It's an Anti Virus program
Obviously not the issue if you don't know what it is
