Been reading afew X-box and Gamecube reviews that keep mentioning how much better the picture is on a 'Progressive scan' tv.
Can someone explain what this is about? do UK tv's have this feature? Why is it better?

Progressive scan is another name for non-interlaced scan. Only on (some) NTSC discs. Only with HDTVs (I believe).

As far as I understand progressive scan is not related to HDTV. With progressive scan the scan lines are interlaced with eachother for a much smoother image. I do not know of any European TVs that have progressive scan.

Firstly to clear a few misconceptions up!
Being able to get progressive scan has nothing to do with what is on the disk, ALL DVDs of ALL regions can output in progressive scan (though to get R2 disks to work the player will need to be 'chipped')
Progressive scan is not interlaced or interleaved, it produces a picture in a single, progressive frame.
To make use of Progressive scan you will need a DVD player that outputs progressive scan, or an Interlaced player with an outboard de-interlacer such as the Iscan Pro and then you'll need a TV that will accept Progressive scan.
The ONLY connection that is available for Progressive scan is Component - but not all component connections are capable of taking Progressive scan.

Hope this helps!

Alternatively,use a tv with it's own de-interlacer.(loewe,samsung etc)
As with dvd players,it's ability to produce a good progressive picture(free from artifacts)has a lot to do with the internal hardware. Not all de-interlacers are created equal.
