If I network 3 home pcs would I be able to restrict access to certain folders/shares? Say PC1 has the shared folders, could I give access to PC2 but deny PC3?

XP Pro YES (enable advanced file sharing options)
XP Home Not as easy! Could probable do it be restricting access to IP addresses using a firewall...

You can disable simple file sharing in XP Home - see here (http://wiki.ehow.com/Disable-Simple-File-Sharing-in-Windows-Xp-Home-Edition) for details.

EDIT: Actually this is more of a workaround that a fix as it doesn't disable SFS, just bypasses it. It should work though!

All 3 pc's will be Pro. Will it be quite easy then?

Very easy as you can set up permissions on each folder to allow who can access them or not.

In Explorer go to

Tools -> Folder Options -> View Tab

and then scroll to the bottom to detick the Simple File Sharing option.

ok, so when I told my mate to order the computers with Pro on, he does the opposite.

So now what's the cheapest/best way to upgrade them to pro? Having bought the computers from Dell, could he ask them to upgrade the licences?
