View Full Version : Planet of the Apes ending
Just saw my region 1 (canadian) copy, considering the mediocre reviews I was delighted with the finished product. Also all the gripes about the ending are totally unwarranted, it made perfect sense!!!

when asked you lot about the ending you told me it was meant not to make sense, and now you're hitting me with some kind of ultra-complex diagram!?
i cant understand this its all too confusing...I'm just gonna stick with...
"are you mad Burton!? The ending doesn't make any sense!!!"

LOL
It's funny that explaination came AFTER the movie. Makes u think that they tried to explain it all because everyone thought it was not right.
Kinda like an after thought :D
"Let's make a movie, then months after it is released we will explain the plot + ending because it makes no sense in the film at all"
:D

Does it matter if it makes sense? Why this obsession with plot? Personally I think if you ignore the plot of POTA I think you're left with a pretty good film, so I ignored it.
Gotta say I understood the plot at the time, but then decades of SF television did serve as good conditioning.
Even if you were confused, the final ending was really just a coda - like the end of Army of Darkness. The main meat of the story had already been resolved.
The very end was almost a teaser, with the explanation revealed in the inevitable sequel where Thade escapes and makes for Earth, arriving many years ahead of Marky-Mark and screwing everything up.
As an admirer of the original Apes series' complex but solid continuity, I thought this was a touch of welcome, ingenious science fiction.

What I want to know, is how Thade got Leo's pod out of the water, as it is cleary explained in the film, apes are scared of the water.
My interpretation of the ending was different from the posted one. Probably just as flawed but it worked for me...if you want a brief run down email me @ roliepie@aol.com.
This film was even more mediocre and pedestrian on a second viewing than when I first saw it at the pictures. As for the ending it was contrived and very crap
As i understood it tim Burton was meant to have said that the end was not meant to have a meaning and it was a twist for twists sake.

I thought the ending made sense. The diagram on the insert of the DVD helps to explain it too, especially the line 'Time doesn't travel in a straight line through an Ion Storm' (or whatever the storm was - I can't remember exactly...)

I agree. I've read interviews with Tim Burton where he's stated that even he doesn't know what the ending is about.

i am no jedi, but the ending is clear as day to me!
and looking at the diagram only emphasises it. if anyone is still confused just clear your mind and read the diagram slowly!
:D
All the ending means is that they'd read the book. The book actually has two twist endings in as many pages - one of which is the ending of the film. The other is part of a framing device and relies, for the most part, on the reader's assumptions. While it could have been used in the film it would have depended on visual slight-of-hand that I doubt would have fooled a monkey...

I suppose they were on the ship and being trained to be horsetraunauts.

Whilst I enjoyed the film I thought the end sucked like a black hole. Not only did they overcome their fear of water but they also managed to extract and repair a machine that was pretty near toast when it hit the water and had also been sitting in water for some time. But why are we wondering about an implausible ending to a popcorn movie :D
I watched this with my 12-year-old daughter last week and neither of us had any problems with the ending - it's just a twist and it never occured to either of us to work out exactly how it was possible. In fact, if I did that with all the popcorn movies I watch I'd still only be partway through Terminator 2 :)
My daughter summed it up perfectly when she said: "He would have been better off staying on the Planet Of The Apes with that woman, wouldn't he daddy" :D

Well I love the original (which had an amazing twist) and the enw one, I hate it! Just read that explanation. Fair enough. But it' still dumb and I till hate the re-make, which insults the original... Nuff said :)
i didnt even realise the ending was difficult to understand - the nasty gorilla went back to earth and took control using a time capsule.
