View Full Version : Hooking up Sky Digital box to Dell 2405FPW Monitor
Hey guys,
I got Sky multi-room installed today (so they moved the original Sky Digital box upstairs to where my monitor is). What I'm not sure about is how I'm going to hook the digibox up to my monitor.
The monitor has component inputs, so could I use a SCART to COMPONENT cable for the video? Which of course leaves the issue of the audio (the monitor doesn't have speakers). The digibox has the left (red) and right (white) audio outputs. Is it possible to plug my headphones into a splitter, which then would have the rca wires going into the digibox?
In other words, what would be the best way of doing this?
Cheers guys ;)

Simple answer...
Don't bother!!!
I tried this with one of my 2405FPW's and the quality was realy bad. Even tried connecting it using a £100+ SCART to VGA Adapter and it still suffered from severe ghosting.
I think the problem is that it realy needs a Analogue Video to VGA Convertor or External Tuner box which is capable of outputting the ridiculuous resolutions these monitors are designed for LOL (which btw don't exist)
If you get it working well then I would love to know how!

I tried mine with Freeview via s-vid and it looked good to me!
Well I hooked it up via composite (just for now) and it looks pretty impressive. Better than I thought it would that's for sure. Gonna grab a scart to component cable and try that tomorrow. Can't wait ;)
I've got the exact same monitor and just had Sky multiroom installed. I've just had a quick go with a Scart convertor in the back of the Skybox and using a S Video lead from box to monitor but I couldn't get any picture  Don't know if i'm doing anything wrong ot not and I'd rather not splash out on a scart to composite lead if its not going to work.
What leads did you go for and did you get it all working sound and everything?
I'd say a JS Tech Scart > VGA converter is your best bet, if you don't want to put a stupidly expensive scaller in the middle of it all...

What leads did you go for and did you get it all working sound and everything? A regular sky box won't work with a generic scart to svideo cable, I've got our Sky box (Grundig one) svideo direct to a 2405FPW and its quite good, almost as good as running via a scaler at 1024

Thanks for the advice  Can I now ask for just a bit more, a good place to get a Scart > VGA converter. Thanks in advance.
JS Tech scart to VGA (http://www.js-technology.com/product_info.php?products_id=33)
Right, sorry to come back to this again but I've still not managed to get everything set up  I've bought a basic Scart to RGB lead, I'd rather get that working first and then I can see if the quality is suitable before I fork out over £100 on a spangly convertor box thingy, really showing off my technical prowess :) Anyway the main point is I can't get any picture, I've tried connecting the Scart lead to both scart sockets at the back of the sky box, i've changed the video output from PAL to RGB but still nothing. Am I doing it right??? :help:
what is actually on the non-scart-end of the lead (in connection terms) mate? (rgb not being a connector)

A basic SCART to RGB lead probably won't work, if you're feeding it into the VGA socket of the monitor.
The SCART signal is R, G, B and a syncronisation signal.
VGA requires R, G, B and *two* syncronisation signals.
The JS Technology box creates those two syncronisation signals from the single one in the SCART connection, whereas your lead just hopes that your monitor will get along only with one.
Unless you're hell-bent on maximum quality, I would be tempted to pick up a cheap second-hand JS Technology RGB to S-Video converter (perhaps put a wanted ad on the AV Forums) and that should be fine. Or else get a refurb Sky+ box for £49 (see Bargain Forum) as that has an S-Video out.
Right the scart to rgb cable has this at the other end:

which I have plugged in to the relevant rgb composite sockets at the bottom of the monitor. I'm starting to feel like a real dunce, I thought this was going to be easy.
