Im pretty sure I read a few weeks back that a model had been released in the UK allowing recording to DVD format?

Has anyone brought one or seen one in action at all? How good are they - what is the quality like on the recording and what sources can be recorded from?

Also, is the limit still 4GB on the actual recordable discs?

Is there a standalone model as well or are they only to be found in PCs?

The Panasonic model (price ~£1,000) was reviewed in this month's What Video & TV, and came out very well indeed.

A Philips model (which is DVD+RW) came out a couple of months ago (price was ~£1,300) but didn't come out as well in the reviews.

The space limit is 4.7GB, although this can I believe be doubled with a double-sided disc (which would need to be turned over).

Only the Panasonic one allows time-slip recording.

These are definitely stand-alone boxes, as they are also DVD players in their own right.

You can now buy models that go into your PC also, for circa £500 -- its worth noting that a blank DVD disc is about £25/£30 though, so copying movies (who me?!) is not worth it -- buy the original!
