I've recently being trying to get the symmetrey set right on my new Toshiba set but after going through all the settings it seems its just not possible to get it perfect. The reason I call tell i'm losing about a centimetre from each side is cos i'm running it from the PC and on the monitor I can see the extra bits of picture. I had this with my previous set as well, but why is it so?

Overscan is there to stop you seeing the **** poor geometry that most sets have at the edges.
If you can get into the service menu you could possibly reduce it by adjusting the V-Size & H-Size settings, but don't moan when the edges aren't straight. :p

Yep i'm changing it from the service menus. Cheers for the explantation though.
I've also noticed i'm losing a bit from the top and bottom from animorphic 1.85:1 discs as well, can't solve that either, has anyone with a Toshiba 28W93B being able to sort that using the service menu?

I actually have the same problem i also have the Toshiba 28W93B and I also wanted to get into the Service Menu but because I have a new model with the new remote I cannot get into the Service Menu anymore as the old combination does not work on the new remote. But if you find a way please let us know
Thanks

MrLondon, I only got my Tosh the other week and i'm pretty sure its the newest model of the set. The way I get into the service menu is:
press mute once
press mute again and hold it down
press the menu button on the set hidden by the flap
a small S appears and I press menu again and the first option appears on the top left. You press the channel up/down to change the current setting and the volume buttons to change the hex values.

That is weird, as I got mine about 1 month ago from John Lewis and there is no more flap on my remote control, mine is a long one with all bottoms on the surface, that is what I mean. I think if the next generation of remotes. But I will still try it out.

while on the geometry subject I've just got a Philips 286515 which I'm very happy with apart from there is a small amount of distortion on verticle lines. I've been into the store and all the sets I looked at had similar faults/features.
Is it posable to get this right or is it something you have to live with on W/S sets.
I've booked it to be sent to Philips to be looked at, is it worth it.

Firstly, it isn't an attribute of widescreen sets, it's an attribute of Cathode Ray Tubes of all shapes.
CRTs intrinsically cannot produce a properly-shaped image. So TVs have an array of electronics in them to tweak the intrinsically bad picture produced by the CRT into something like the right shape.
Depending on the mechanical construction of the TV tube, these electronic adjustments may be able to get the picture just about right. If the construction is just a bit beyond tolerance, the electronics may not be able to fix it fully.
TV picture geometry *can* be perfect - just spend about £13,000 on a Grade 1 broadcast-standard Sony monitor ;)
I know it sounds a lot, but that £13,000 will get you a massive 21" 4:3 tube, plus direct SDI digital input...
