I requested a MAC number from Pipex to swap broadband providers. I had to ask twice, but then recieved an email saying that I was one of their best customers yadda yadda :) and offering me a permanent £6 discount per month, plus a free month if I signed up for another 12 months (I'm on their 2Gb unlimited). This equates to an average saving of nearly £9 per month.
I left anyway to go to Plusnet, as it was still a saving of £3/m, plus better contention and newsgroups etc. Also, treating your customers like that is contemptible IMO, so I voted with my feet.
However, if you want/need to stay with Pipex for a particular reason, it might be worth asking for a MAC number and see what they say. At worst you can contact them within a month and request the transfer be stopped, no harm done.
