I requested a MAC number from Pipex to swap broadband providers. I had to ask twice, but then recieved an email saying that I was one of their best customers yadda yadda :) and offering me a permanent £6 discount per month, plus a free month if I signed up for another 12 months (I'm on their 2Gb unlimited). This equates to an average saving of nearly £9 per month.

I left anyway to go to Plusnet, as it was still a saving of £3/m, plus better contention and newsgroups etc. Also, treating your customers like that is contemptible IMO, so I voted with my feet.

However, if you want/need to stay with Pipex for a particular reason, it might be worth asking for a MAC number and see what they say. At worst you can contact them within a month and request the transfer be stopped, no harm done.

Why on earth would you need your mac address to change suppliers? And even then why do you need to phone your current isp to find out what it is?

It's not a MAC address it's a MAC number aka Migration Reference Number and you can't switch providers without it.

MAC stands for Migration Authorisation Code :p Its a system BT use to move people from one supplier to another easily (thats the idea anyway!)

I decided to stay as I want newsgroups with a 30 day retention not the poor 5-7 days you get with Plusnet. Could get a faster connection for the same as Pipex but I prefer the long retention.

I'm closing this as I can't see where the bargain is here, I'm sure if people wanted to contact their own ISP then they might/might not get offered money off deals and it sounds as if this is only on offer to the thread starter and possibly not everyone in general.
