This came up in another thread but I thought it worthwhile for it to have its own thread. This issue is becoming more of a daily one as Ken Livingstone recent issued advice to the Met to confiscate cameras of anyone using them in the Royal parks, and anyone pointing a camera at a child - other councils could go this way.
A worrying prospect.
This should help for guidance

Ken Livingstone issued advice to the Met to confiscate cameras?
Under what law would they be able to do this?
He can advise all he wants, but what's the legal status of them being able to carry out said 'advice'.
Surely the council cannot ignore the law, just because they think its right?

Royal Parks aren't public places so that's easy enough. As for anywhere else, a policeman can already confiscate anything if he believes an offence has been committed. That applies to a camera if he thinks it's being used inappropriately.
It isn't that clear cut otherwise cops would confiscate every camera at any demonstration showing them using their usual violence against protestors etc.
I once had a copper try to confiscate my camera and I simply refused to let go of it citing its value and his lack of insurance. I was persistent and they eventually gave up trying to get it off me.

The fact that it isn't clear-cut is the worry if you ask me.
Cheers for the link, good info there :)
The world is gradually going mad.
Be a bummer if you are using a Minolta Z2 and reviewing a picture using the viewfinder lcd and not the screen, and was accidently pointing at some child at the time.
