View Full Version : 2 coax digital devices into 1 coax digi input?

I think the Sony 1070 is a great amp, but with the dire failing that they put three optical and only one coax digi inputs on the thing.

I may soon need to input two devices both only having coax outputs for their digital signals. Therefore I was thinking that as coax dig is relatively lo-tech 75ohm RCA video lead connectivity, would it be possible to get a Y lead or switch of some form in order to attach two devices that are mutually exclusive to the one coax input.

I realise i need to be careful about which is inputting to the amp at a time etc, but would it work in theory?

Also, would i be right in thinking that most DVD players send no signal at all to the amp when they are not playing (but still on), as my amp changes display etc when a disc plays, so the signal must drop when not playing even if on.

Finally has anyone got any idea where i can get a dead cheap Y cable or switch that will do the job?

if u go the Y splitter route, make sure its a 75ohm video one, all the ones I've seen are for audio.

I've read about coaxial -> optical converters but not sure of a UK supplier, if you can find one then you can use one of the amps optical inputs instead

maplin do a coax - optical converter in a nice little box for 15 quid - direct link here (http://www.maplin.co.uk/products/details.php?cartid=0112030921271442196&moduleno=29291&manufacturer=) (if it doesn't work, go to www.maplin.co.uk and type coaxial optical into the search box).

do all converters need a power supply?

I believe so in order to emit enough light from the conversion down the optical line.

rsykes - do you know if you need to get an optical lead as well as that converter to connect to the amp? If so that would add on another 20 quid which would make it a bit of an outlay.

you can get an optical lead at Beyondhifi (http://www.beyondhifi.net), the BTECH range starts at £9 for the 80cm one
